junker154: Baldurs Gate and Age of Wonders work now without any major problems.

But it is really NOX and Cosscks that I want to be able to run. I tried some of the suggestions that you guys mentioned, without any success. I also installed older drivers.
Have you tried asking Support for help?
Well I used the support option with Cossacks, but there was no answer whatsoever that could have helped me out.

With Nox I had not time contacting the support. I only tried the most common fixes that GoG suggests if there might be a problem, but to no avail.

SimonG: I say so. 99% of GOGs and Steam games run on my PC without any problems.

jamyskis: I want your PC. I have two desktop PCs - one WIndows 7/XP dual boot, one Windows 98 network-isolated, and a laptop running Windows XP, and I would say around 25% of my games refuse to run on at least one of the machines despite being in-spec. Around 2% of the games refuse to run on any of those three.
Well, Win 98 never ran properly in the first place. But ever since the later XP/Win 7 (my Pc was built in '09) versions, I have hardly had any problems. This of course only goes for current gen games that I buy of Steam or GOGs which were made to run on todays machines. If I put my System Shock 2 disc in my drive I don't expect anything.

The only game 'I can think of that caused me grief in recent times was Rage, as it didn't like ati cards. It was 100% playable, it just looked like rubbish. The last problems I had with games were disc checks, but since I no longer have discs, they are gone to. (Fallout 3 refused to find the disc 4 out of 5 times!)

Same here. The only games I have problems with are those exceeding my PC's capabilities, but that is expectable.

Funnily enough, Rage was one of the few games of recent years that I didn't have any technical problems with, and I'm aware that I'm in the distinct minority with this. I did have a few performance problems to begin with on my HD4890, but a quick Catalyst upgrade solved that issue (probably the only time in my 15 years as a PC gamer that the customer support cop-out advice of "upgrade your drivers" actually paid off). The only problem I had with Rage was Steam (what else?) constantly trying to reacquire 10GB of data.

As for disc checks, the only compatibility issues I've had have been with Starforce games and 90s-era SafeDisc checks. They still work fine on the Win98 PC they were designed for and on my modern PC it's nothing a crack won't solve. It's a given that DRM is going to cause similar headaches for games today when they reach that age, regardless of the system they're played on.

Other than that, I've had problems with pretty much every game I've bought in the past on release: The Sims 3, GTA 4, X-Blades, Skyrim to name a few.

StingingVelvet: Anyone who argues PC gaming isn't a hassle is sipping the whiskey IMO.
avatar
kavazovangel: It isn't. And I don't drink whiskey. :p
I agree.
It's only a hassle if:

You pirate. (cracks, patches and all sorts of problems)

If you buy digitally chances are 99,9% you are good to go. In my experience that is.

Of course, if you are trying to run old games on modern systems/OS you might run into problems. That's what dual boot is for. Or a VM. I don't have any of those problems.

StingingVelvet: I wish I could say that, but never in a million years could I. I'm always having to tweak something, change a mode, go into a control panel, what-have-you. It's simple stuff, but it IS a hassle compared to "put disc in, play."
The options are, well, options. I rather have more options and more "hassle" than be limited to a very restrictive system. Can't fault you for going the easy road, though. I find that different people have different levels of patience. And you have to like solving problems. This helps in heaps if you're an engineer.

Why do you assume because I said PC gaming is a pain in the ass that I went the easy road?

Probably because I'm reading between the lines too hard. And because it would be logical? If you hate the stick, buy an automatic I guess.

I don't hate it, and I have been a PC gamer for 20 years. I just think it's common sense that the platform is a pain in the ass compared to other ways to play games.

junker154: My specs are:

Aspire 5750G

Intel Core i7 2Ghz
Nvidia Geforce GT 540M 1760 MB Ram
6Gb DDR3 RAM
640GB HDD
Windows 7 64 Bit

And please spare me with a suggestion like "Update your graphics card with a new driver!"
I don´t know what happens with laptops but I have huger probleams with many of my games. I have I have a dell xps 17, with a geforce 555m.

Strijkbout: This is starting to turn into a bash the helper topic.
I'm outta here and good luck getting your games to run.
It wasn't my intention to bash you in any way.
Apologies if it came across that way.

Actually, a lot of the pain I have from consoles (well, handhelds that is) is the lack of options. Some 3DS games do experience some slowdowns. I would rather have the option to shut down on the gimmicks and have a better framerate.

Ever since Steam, PC has reached this "plug and play" usage that consoles have. Especially with Steam, most games even search the "optional settings" by themselves and I literally only look once at the options to see it working.

I'll just massively disagree with that and move on. I'm not sure what else to debate honestly.
Way to derail a thread :P

Well I am still looking for a fix, can't find much. Might contact GoG support again.
