Okay, seriously, WTF?!? The Kindle version is more expensive than the physical book?! And they even ship the physical book for free!

Are the folks at Amazon insane, stupid or do they just want their own ebook platform to fail?

If you go to the Kindle version page you'll see a small message saying "This price was set by the publisher" so it's not really Amazon's fault unfortunately.

Also, I'm seeing the price for the Kindle version as $8.08 and the cheapest physical edition is the Mass Market Paperback at $9.99 (or 5.51 for non-Amazon price).

The 1984-ish Dune movie is absolute garbage and should be avoided like the plague.

The SciFi Dune movies (two of them, the first is Dune proper & the second combines Dune Messiah and Children of Dune) are quite good. The sets are well done, the costumes are amazing, and the acting is pretty good. Also, Professor X from X-Men: First Class plays Leto II.

The only thing (that I can remember) that's not really believable/divergence from the books is the lack of stillsuit discipline when the Fremen are in the sietch.

I don't see that. I see that the suggested retail price of $18 is set by the publisher.

Any games like dune?

Well... as far as the same setting goes, there are these.

I think the best solution is to read the first four (up through God-Emperor) and stop there. I wasn't a big fan of the last couple. I've not read the "next generation" of books, but I HAVE read other works by Kevin J Anderson, and he's simply not a good writer. Plus the reviews and feedback I've heard about them have been universally negative. The cash cow has run dry, but they just keep milking!

On the games note, Dune 2 is regarded as one of the founders of the strategy genre as we know it today, and it's still an enjoyable game, though it's pretty dated.

I think that the only really good Dunge games are the original Dune, which was IMO fantastic, and Emperor: Battle for Dune.

It had some cool aspects to it. I liked the thumpers and the worms. The Harkonnens were ridiculous.

As far as the book, it may help to read the glossary in the back first. Then you can learn what some of the strange expressions mean.

I'd recommend the 1984 movie if you really want a surreal experience. Sure, looking at it in any serious notion will reveal that it's not truly a good film, but every time I watch it there is a feeling of interest and something interesting to behold. You can tell that there was passion put into the film and things simply didn't pan out for various reasons. Look on it as a visual experience.

The worms were fugly, especially in the final fight scene. The thumpers, while interesting, weren't really something that a Fremen would be able to usually carry whilst in the desert. They were simply too big and wasteful looking. A Fremen would need something small and cheap-to-produce since they were one-shot items.

The Harkonnens, especially the Baron were horribly done. The whole point of the Emperor siding with them was that it was done in secret lest the Landsraad revolt. Instead, what do we get? Raban leading soldiers that look exactly like the Emperor's Sardukar. Also, Sting-in-a-diaper is one of those things that I wish I could erase from my mind.

And don't get me started on the Navigator...

Err... It's on my eternal "to-read" list, but I've seen the movie at least :-P
