Well, I first saw the 1984 movie and this was many years ago. Also played a few of the games too. However, I only got around to reading Dune last year and then followed it up with the second book. Still need to get around to reading book 3 though.
Why is everyone bashing the 1984 movie?

I thought it was an excellent movie in its own way. Very well done, with excellent visuals, great acting and an awesome soundtrack.

Yes, it's not exactly true to the books but I don't think a movie has to be.

I also felt the movie more entertaining than some of the more tedious parts of the book.

It's a shame it's cut to hell though the actual film was 2-3 times longer originally the studio recut it to 90 minutes I think the current version is 101 minutes...
I've never finished the book. A few years ago decided to read it and finish it, but I got about 3/4ths of the way through, set it down and never picked it back up.

I do love the '84 movie though. And Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune. And the board game. That was so much fun. I remember playing it with my brother and him placing all his troops in two provinces, one of which being the Shield Wall. Nuked it. And then got him to use a lasgun (is that what it was called?) on my attacking guy with a shield, wiping out the rest of his army. Wish they'd re-release it.

Lasgun is correct. It's the Holtzmann interaction between the las and the shield that produces a pseudo-atomic reaction.

Using the nuke though? While Paul argued that he was using nukes against a naturally occurring feature rather than an army, I'm not sure you should've been able to get by with it. Such a move against an army should bring down the Landsraad to destroy your House. :p

Patryn: ...great acting...
I think I must have seen a different movie altogether. The '84 movie has some of the worst acting I've ever seen in what is supposed to be a 'professional' production. Don't even get me started on the mostly ridiculous dialog.

I still can't fathom that I actually liked this movie when I was little. I only watched it again a few years ago, and all I can say is if you want to have a good laugh: go for it!

It's certainly a little over the top, yes, but in my opinion it fits the overall style of the movie perfectly.
Sure, if you don't want to like a movie, you don't have to. I think it's great in its own way and I like to watch it every now and then.

It's certainly not a movie for everyone but then again the book isn't either.
Read it at school, iirc I read about three of the series, but got bored after that.
I love the book...it's classified as Science Fiction, but IMO it's really much more of a Political Fiction book.

The movies have never really been able to capture how great a story it is. A great deal of the Story is driven by internal monologues and quotes from in-Canon Historical and Religious texts.

The end of Dune is terrific!

The acting is certainly not top notch. It's bearable and I feel there are some performances people over scrutinize, but could you honestly tell me that Baron von Grossface was a brilliantly played role?

The reason that the movie is engrossing is because of how the elements, with some very good and some very bad, meld together to create a one of a kind experience. It's certainly not one of the worst films one will see as a connoisseur of cinema, I can say that much.

You are, of course, right that the acting is not great from an objective point of view. What I meant with great acting is, that the way the acting it, it fits the movie perfectly with its strangeness.
No, really, I think it's great!
