Zchinque: "Tried"?
I'd say it was pretty successful.
jefequeso: You were town, yet you were trying to confuse the whole town?
umm...why?
Bringing people out of their comfort zones by making them confused, angry, or whatever, makes them more likely to take down their shields, and put their real thoughts and emotions into their posts. These are again easier and more accurate for analysis of the mindset behind the posts.
There was also an element of smoke and mirrors. Consider the following three things:
1) It was the second game played on this site (and the first one I played in).
2) I was the one who introduced mafia to this community.
3) I was more or less the only one with much prior experience.
Given those three, I found it likely that I would, rightly or wrongly, be considered a "strong" player. Now in my experience, highly revered, again whether deserved or not, players have a tendency to die early. The town want them dead because "OMG! What if they're mafia?!", and the mafia want them dead because, well, they know they're not mafia, and fear them because they're more experienced, perhaps their perceived analytical skills, and so on.
