One of the things that's interesting about Morrowind is how different it feels from the other TES games. It plays like an Elder Scrolls game, but the environment is much more surreal and exotic compared to 4 and 5, the closest thing in the later ones would probably be Shivering Isles.

EDIT: Oh, and thanks for the link to GCD. GCD + MGSO = Easily and significantly improved Morrowind.

I was under the impression a while back that this wasn't compatible with Steam? Fixed?

It should be. At least the french version I was speaking about is, you just have to read the readme file to know how to do.

It's compatible as long as you disable the in-game overlay.

Btw, does anyone know of any combat enhancer mods? Maybe something like Deadly Reflex for Oblivion?
Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. I was just debating on whether to play Morrowind or Oblivion. I've only played about the first hour or so of each awhile ago. Looks like Morrowind wins the battle now.

Kezardin: I know about the levelling up, but it's a pain in the backside keeping track to make sure you get the best result - +5 for three attributes - at each level (my comment about bookkeeping).
You don't have to make sure to get the best result, you know. I have played Morrowind and Oblivion for years and kept track of the system only 3 or 4 times in total, yet I have finished most of the two games. Really, unless you're a powergamer, you don't have to do anything, this is not your typical RPG.

Kezardin: Another problem with the Morrowind system is that it can be counter intuitive. I'm sure many new players have given their character athleticism as a major skill, rubbed their hands together as the levels come thick and fast, then find their character starts getting killed regularly because he/she is great at running and not much else ☺
Well actually that's pretty intuitive, it's stupid that in other RPGs you get, say, by lockpicking better at shooting.
So, been playing for a couple of days now and it is indeed awesome. I'm somewhat loath to admit it because of how long it took me to play it, but it might become my favorite Elder Scrolls game. Call me a graphics whore, but using MGE XE is totally worth the FPS hit. :D GCD's really nice too, Morrowind and Oblivion's leveling system always got on my nerves and GCD feels much more natural. A couple of other excellent mods I recommend: Children of Morrowind, the LGNPC series (adds a significant amount of NPC dialog to decrease repetitiveness), Starfire's NPC Additions (Adds more NPCs to the game. Has some cool stuff like Wizards teleporting into towns), Passive Healthy Wildlife (Makes wildlife that has no reason to randomly attack you more passive. They still attack if bothered), NX9 Guards Complete (Significantly varies the appearance of guards and makes everything less boring). Anyone got any other good stuff to add to the list?

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how MGSO compares to Brorrowind? http://pastehtml.com/view/1cq4cvf.html

versus [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZNubB6R9U8]Morrowind MSGO

Both very nice ☺

Likely both installs use many of the same mods, so it might come down to what you choose to install.
(like the large number of trees in the Brorrowind clip)

So... pretty... I think I might like Brorrowind slightly more from those videos, but not nearly enough to uninstall MGSO and then install Brorrowind.
And here I am again, compelled to re-install morrowind and give it another chance.
Maybe this time I will manage to get into it.

Is there anything specific that stopped you from getting into it before? Because I may have a mod for it. :D

EDIT: I just discovered that MGE has an option to make combat like Daggerfall (hold mouse and drag for directional attacks). Might make combat a bit less weird, especially with the Combat Enhanced Mod.

Well, judging from Kezardin's comparison vids, MSGO is more lore-friendly. Mods adding huge trees always bothered me because most regions of Vvardenfell are supposed to suffer from lack of wood, nevemind about simply preserving vanilla design. Other than that MSGO also adds stuff like beggars, fishermen and stuff to make the whole thing more immersive. Still seems better, IMO.

Yep, I certainly do recommend doing that. Another thing I found good was to write 'set timescale to 10' - default is 30, meaning game's time is 30 times faster than our time, but that causes the real-time shadows to visibly move.

Ah, I haven't played without MGSO so i assumed the beggars and stuff were there in Vanilla. That definitely sets it above Brorrowind. Also, thanks for the timescale tip, that sounds like a good idea.

EDIT: Here's a nice flyover of Morrowind using MGSO and Tamriel Rebuilt with a ridiculously wide panoramic aspect ratio.

I think I just get bogged down by it after a while, I feel like I spend a disproportionate amount of time trying to find things. The tipping point of one of my attempts was that one ridiculous city. The person who designed the layout for that city is just, evil, actually evil. I can't quite remember it's name right now, Vivec?
Yeah, Vivec is pretty bizarrely laid out. I feel like the trick is to treat the game somewhat exploratorily (totally a word!), in that you shouldn't necessarily just go immediately from quest point to quest point. Take some time to take in the scenery. Also, if you didn't know, clicking on Options in your Journal lets you see an index of your quests.
