You know, I wasn't sold on the remake until I saw this trailer. This may be the best trailer I've ever seen, and it has me pumped for the movie. Christmas can't come soon enough!

But I can't stop talking about the trailer. It is perfect. It shows you much, while telling you nothing. You only get glimpses of the mystery. And even though I've already read the book, and saw the foreign film, I am absolutely psyched for David Fincher's brilliant spin on it.

At the very least, if this does well, there's a chance the pieces of shit that were the sequels will be fixed by Mr. Fincher. No "made-for-TV" is suitable for Lisbeth!

I was sold when I heard "fincher." But when I saw the trailer at the theater last night I was double sold.

It seems to be right up FIncher's alley. I am not one of those who think the Fincher is a god who can do no wrong...I did not like "Benjamin Button" but I think that "Seven" and "ZOdiac" show that he is a master of this kind of thriller.

I don't like remakes usually, but it could well be better than the original swedish adaptation. I thought the theatrical versions were pretty much incomprehensible, I was glad I had read the books!

The trailer didn't make the movie look bad really, but I didn't see anything done better. Also, I think the inclusion of way more "pretty people" may spoil the aesthetic I loved about the Swedish versions. Also, good luck doing a better Lisbeth Salander than the gal in the original movies.

What about Fincher's deal to make sequels if this one does well? Wouldn't you like the God-awful "We ran out of budget" sequels to be replaced by something better?

I liked the sequels, actually. Now, I have not read the books, so perhaps from the perspective of following the books they were a travesty, I don't know. But the story was always about the characters and the characters were awesome, even in the sequels.

Yeah, I suppose that this is one of those cases where just following the movie series is better than reading the books and watching the movies.

Can someone tell me why, whenever a movie in a language other than English does moderately well internationally, Hollywood immediately have to make their own version of it? Is the literacy level in the US so low that the majority of people can't even read subtitles?

From what I've heard the movie version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is fucking horrible, and Fincher does some good movies. In this case I don't think it's a bad thing, especially with Reznor onboard.

From what I've seen myself (since I've actually seen the movie), the movie is fucking awesome. And knowing Hollywood, all the things that make it awesome will be removed from the American version, and replaced with some unnecessary explosions.

I think you basically got it with the last line, but I'm pretty sure it's not illiteracy, so much as the majority in the English-speaking world simply not liking subtitles. Or possibly the majority are just too lazy to deal with them.

Personally, I don't have a problem with subtitles. Some of my favourite films are subtitled. But my parents, both of whom are very literate, simply don't have the patience for them most of the time.

As for the films themselves, I've not seen them myself, nor read the books, but a very good friend assures me the original films are great, as are the novels. He's not particularly looking forward to these remake either.

I just like it because I love Trent Reznor's music, and the more he does the happier I am.

Personally, I find it almost offensive.
I work as a translator, professionally, so I know the importance of catering to the differences in Source/Target audience culture, but Hollywood (and, I must assume, the general American populace) has taken it too far. It is not even only other languages: British television shows and series get recast and remade. I'm surprised there isn't a confederate Dr.Who airing already.

Perhaps this high-budget remake, with its famed director and star-spangled cast will indeed be better in some ways. God knows there are some things that were lacking in the swedish version - but I must say that I find the principle appalling. Accept other cultures and the art they produce. Even if the remake might, cinematically, be better because of its high production values, whether or not it is a better adaption of the books... I doubt it. Some things WILL be lost in translation.
