I don't think that GOG really need to be pushed on the existing price points (perhaps I'm wrong), but I expect they are simply options for the publishers.

I seem to remember the higher price points were suggested for newer games. For GOG to start ripping us off $20 for games released in the early 90's would be to go against their stated objectives. Personally I don't think they'd do it.

I love JRPGs and will never understand the popularity behind Final Fantasy. Although I haven't played hardly any of them, I've started almost all of them and can't get into any.

The Final Fantasy series is indeed overrated and this is coming from someone that owns all the games. I just don't get what's so great about the games? It's likely to pull an Ultima and die off after the plots are so generic and boring people stop buying.

Wow, I loved that movie! And I'm neither really into jRPGs nor Manga/Anime. But sometimes that over the top cliche stuff is just what I need. In a nutshell, it is about a guy seeking redemption. And the "Hello Cloud" scene is just awesomesauce.

To fully understand and appreciate FF VII:AC you need to know the full story of FF VII however.

I beat Crisis Core and I know quite a bit about Final Fantasy 7. That movie is filled with plot holes, muddled script, and it's just all over the place. Personally, not my thing.

My friends and I have come to the conclusion that the whole thing is pure fan service and just made to look cool. With that said though, I enjoy the movie as a mindless action flick (even though they try to push some story and serious bits into it) and try to just have a good time when I watch it.

As for Final Fantasy games in general, I've been a fan since VII (or Mystic Quest if we're counting non-numerical entries) and have been playing the rest ever since.
Never liked FF3.
Can sometimes get into FF2.
Can always do a runthrough of FF1 (GBA remake or above, the other versions are far too old-school for me to get into).
I don't mind FF4.
FF5 is a blast, love the job system and lighter storyline. And Gilgamesh!
FF6 is great, probably the best of the pre-3D ones.
FFVII has beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds and cutscenes, but blocky 3D models.
FFVIII is the start of the more realistic character models, and I really enjoyed the Junction system when I understood how it worked.
FFIX is a throwback to the earlier games and is really well-done.
FFX and up are more or less bleh games to me.

And to keep on topic with the OP, I would perform a manly squee should FFVII & FFVIII were to be released on here someday.

To be honest, i dont think we will ever see FFVII here. It seems that even Steam tried to get it, but for some reason it never happened. Square Enix seems to have forgotten completely about FF series on PCs (except for MMOs).

By the way, ive seen a lot of people complain about the PC version of FFVII. It looks like the soundtrack doesnt sound as good as the PS1 version. Dont ask me why. I have never played the PC version to confirm this, though.

As others have said, the easiest and cheapest way to get a legal copy of FFVII is to buy it from PSN if you have either a PS3 or PSP. Thats actually the best way to get older Squenix titles for PS1, such as Chrono Cross and Parasite Eve, which are just extremely overpriced on ebay.

Well, I know that the PC version of FFVII has a fair bit of problems and doesn't play well with modern OS's, which is probably why it failed to get onto Steam. However, I was able to play it on my XP laptop a couple years ago with a fan patch that fixed a number of things. The music is fine, and the image actually looked better on my laptop than playing the PS1 version on a modern tv. When you can get the game to work, it still holds up (to me anyway), but that might be because I played the PS1 version 15 years ago when it first came out and have some heavily rose-tinted glasses ready to go, just for it.

Supposedly, Advent Children was originally planned as a 20 minute film. It somehow ballooned into a feature length film over the course of it's production. That probably didn't do the plot any favors. To make matters worse, if you haven't played through FFVII, you won't understand the significance of anything they're trying to show you.

While I prefer FF7's ambiguous end, and dislike how AC seemed to go on a resurrection spree, I really liked AC's CG. The recreation of the characters as realisticish looking people was great (though not necessarily how I envisioned them). The anime look never did anything for me. It was kind of like seeing Peter Jackson's take on the Lord of the Ring's characters. Neat stuff.

To my recollection, FF wasn't all that popular in the USA until FFVII (for whatever reason). That game somehow managed to break out of its niche and achieve mainstream popularity. It's my perception that all later games were riding its coat tails.

IMHO, the good FF are probably too old for most younger gamers to enjoy (same problem with Ultima and older WRPGs in general). The graphics are too old and the genre has shifted too much. From what I've seen, the newer ones just aren't as good for their time and place. The production values are amazing though.


Edit: It's worth noting that playing Crisis Core before FF7 spoils everything.

to my thinking AC was a reactive attempt to counter "the spirits within" .... and it did so beautifully.

honestly, I feel most people hold FF7 higher than it should be held ... the game WAS great, until you leave the city; then it just takes a massive dump and degrades into a slush pit of random plot arcs and side quests. I can't help but look back at the game and think that it suffered from a rushed production in order to satisfy Sony's desire for a high profile FF title in the PS1's launch years.

If FF7 hadn't been one of the forerunners of polygon graphics launching on a massive wave of Sony funded marketing, most people would be criticizing it instead of praising it.

my point: AC was pretty meandering and lacked focus, same as FF7. AC kinda fails to live up not because it's worse than the game it's based off of, but more because viewers have grown beyond being so wowed by the visuals that we forgive the failings of the plot.
