MobiusArcher: The whole idea of console gamers being dumber, and less mature than PC gamers was never very accurate to begin with, but at this point that sort of thinking is just ridiculous. Like it or not, Steam more or less is PC gaming now. Take a look at the steam community sometime.

Profanity: Even steam community isn't the lead in mountain dew, halo and cod culture.
Even Halo and CoD communities can't be compares to LoL and DOTA communities and those are 100% PC games.

I played like 5 matches in LOL, but it was enough to met ~15 players who were trying to convince me that they had sexual intercourse with my family members.

That's crazy ironic that you actually consider that experience not being able to compare to Halo and Cod communities.

So apparently, after reading several sources on this, this is what actually went down.

1. Microsoft apes Sony's self-publishing announcement, making mention of the fact that the XB1 is a devkit as well, and for $100, you can publish your own titles.

2. Phil Fish and Jonathan Blow, both being leading figures in the indie gaming community, seemed like a natural fit for members of the media to contact to ask their opinions on how they thought this could effect them. Specifically, Game Informer. Fish and Blow reportedly responded with insults and threats towards this particular journalist for daring to ask them about this, essentially flying off the handle over nothing, in my opinion.

3. Marcus Beer, AKA the Annoyed Gamer, catches wind of these happenstances and defends the media's interest in their opinions on a valid issue that could potentially effect both of them, in a way that is apparently routine for him to do, in a rant. Aside from the "BlowFish" insults, Beer made some valid points. Media interaction is a two way street, and it's unfair for Fish and Blow to come around shilling their games to the media, but unrealistic to expect that the media would not then come to them for their opinions, etc. Not to mention, he made mention of the fact that BOTH Fish and Blow made the conscious choice to appear in Indie Game: The Movie, and had to know what kind of publicity that would then give them, so it's impossible to have your cake and eat it too.

4. Phil Fish catches wind of Beer's podcast and responds in a classic Phil Fish way, directly to Beer. The ensuing fight results in Fish taking his ball and going home. Beer offers both Blow and Fish an avenue to discuss their side via his podcast, but Beer's rant had absolutely zero to do with either of them being on his show. He was merely attempting to call hypocrisy on Blow and Fish's attitudes towards the media, except when they have something to shill.

I'm gonna personally go with Beer on this one, and then I'm going to ignore this happening, roll my eyes and get back to playing good, non-derivative games. :3

It was Beer's responsibility to keep them on task. Of course they're going to try and talk about anything else, but the interviewer is responsible for keeping things on task.

Regardless of the behavior of the interviewees, Beer comes off as being incredibly unprofessional. If he couldn't keep them on task, he should have just unplugged the mic and shut things down.

At the risk of being rude, I really must say: I sure as hell hope people don't consider them leading figures in the indie industry.

What are you talking about? He wasn't interviewing anyone.

Apparently I'm lost here. Replace Beer's name with the interviewer.

But, it's still incredibly unprofessional of him to defend an incompetent interviewer.

This. They never appeared on Beer's show. Beer responded on the occurences AFTER the fact on his own podcast on Gametrailers, Invisible Walls. Beer reportedly offered both of them the chance to respond for themselves ON his show, but he did not interview them, nor were they on his show. Beer also is apparently known for his rants, ala the Angry Gamer, or boogie2988's Francis character.

Nowhere was it stated that the interviewer was incompetent. GI's journalist was simply trying to get their reactions to Microsoft's announcement of self publishing. That's it. From all sources that I've read, Fish and Blow both reacted badly to the question. That being said, context wasn't stated either, so that could be either way.

I said that, and yes, they were incompetent if they allowed it to turn into a promotion for an unrelated product rather than about the topic at hand. Most people who show up for those sorts of interviews are trying to get publicity, and it is the job of the interviewer to keep that to a minimum or at least get answers to the questions.

If they aren't willing to talk about the subject, then cut the mic and stop the segment. Bottom line is that if you're doing a segment on MS' new policies, talking about an unrelated game isn't going to be of interest to the people tuning in anyways.

It seems you still aren't understanding what happened. It wasn't an interview. It was a one-sided thing.

I could be wrong, but from what I gathered the Game Informer jounalist contacted them for an opinion, i.e. sent each an email. They never answered, not even with a "no comment" response, they just went to Twitter to complain about the guy and never got back to him.

That's not what the article you linked says. The article itself pretty much makes Beer look like a complete asshole and does little to suggest that Fish or Blow did anything wrong. Journalists regularly send in requests for interviews or answers to questions that are ignored. I'm not sure why the GI guy should be shown any more respect than genuine journalists.

Even that whole suicide thing was never a death threat, even if you're not familiar with the reference.

I've pieced together a rough sequence of events for people who don't want to go digging for info:

Jonathan Blow tweets about game journalism, saying, among other things:

"Instead of asking developers for useless punditry about a rumor, how about digging into the actual facts, finding out details, etc?"

Phil Fish chimes in, adding:

"wait an hour until it's actually news, why don't you?"

"seriously game journos, when you ask me to comment on a rumor from on another site that you're reporting as news, it makes you look bad."

Marcus Beer comments on those tweets on the show Invisible Walls, saying basically: who do those indie devs think they are, those fucking hipsters, they should be grateful that the press is even willing to talk to them.

Phil Fish , channeling [url=http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instances/400x/35265868.jpg]Bender:

Edit: there were a bunch of other tweets that I left out for the sake of keeping it concise. If you see any inaccuracies or something relevant left out, do point it out.
