When I clicked on this thread, I sort of naturally assumed it would be a GK1 giveaway...

Ah, this is a tough call between Monkey Island and Gabriel Knight 1.
If I absolutely have to pick one it's Monkey Island because GKK1 has several timed insta-death puzzles which is something I've always found annoying. I wish game designers would realize you can create a spooky or even scary mood without those cheap deaths. Every time you have to reload a game it brakes the immersion so it's a counter-productive feature anyways.
So...Monkey Island it is!
