The Guild is a truly awesome game.

Ah, this is a tough call between Monkey Island and Gabriel Knight 1.

If I absolutely have to pick one it's Monkey Island because GKK1 has several timed insta-death puzzles which is something I've always found annoying. I wish game designers would realize you can create a spooky or even scary mood without those cheap deaths. Every time you have to reload a game it brakes the immersion so it's a counter-productive feature anyways.

So...Monkey Island it is!

I'll add another nod for GK1. It is exactly what you want!

I need to check through my backlog. I think I already own a few of these games.
