karacho: i have read 3 stories so far from howard about conan, and in my opinion the fist movie is a great depiction of the charakter
avatar
cogadh: That's kind of what I said (thought I wouldn't necessarily call Arnold's depiction "great"). They used the character but didn't respect the story. This new movie apparently follows much more closely to the story.
They stayed true to the Charakter (and the mood of the books) and managed to put together a Story that introduced and developed him to the point that somebody could read the books and think "yeah thats like i know him from the movie". The way they did this opened up possibilities to show more about the charakter and made the audience getting personally involved. So we got the charakter, we got MUCH of the charakter (and by that i dont mean screentime), we got personally attached, and on top of that a really good movie that is good on his own rights.

The problem with the new movie is, maybe they stay true to a story, but from what i saw i dont think they will stay true to the charakter (seems more to be a dumb barbarian in the classic sense, not anywhere near conan who is more than just a barbarian) or the mood (fighting in the books as far as i have read is pretty raw, and not about matrix like dodging).
The new movie looks liek action only, i highly doubt we get any philosophie, any shots of conan thinking about the world around him, anything deep at all. The original was full of layers that quietly revealed nuances of the charakter and how he sees the world.

Good of ya to mention the fighting in the stories - they were beautiful! It didn't matter who was fighting who, it was always just wild and frenzied, whether it's Prince Katumon repeatedly crashing a rock against Conan's head, or Conan vs Baal-Pteor (EPIC BATTLE OF THE CENTURY!) OR CONAN CHARGING HIS RAGTAG ARMY AGAINST THE NEMEDIAN HORDE RARRGHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Just thinking about the stories gets me pumped on adrenaline. I need to walk out now and punch something.

Aren't the Conan books at the Congressional Library or something? I could have sworn they were free online somewhere.

Along with some of the original Buck Rogers serials.
I don't know what license they're under, but yeah you can easily find them with a quick Google. That's how I first got acquainted with Solomon Kane - after I'd read all the Conan stories (and a few good pastiches by Mr John M. Roberts and Karl Wagner), I was so starved for more high adventure stories that I decided to look at Howard's other characters - which by the way are amazing too, although I really didn't like the El Borak stories.

Incidentally, if anyone here has an interest, look out for the Western yarn "Vultures of Wahpeton". Someone needs to make a movie out of that.

Disgusting shit, just some "fantasy" videogame with shitty 3D effects on the screen. "Modern" assholes placed behind the camera do know a damn nothing about what an "epic" movie means.

And so do the viewers. Please, give me back John Milius and some real "movie"....
This is about the original movie. And you must read it. Because it is awesome, if you're into that kind of thing.

Bombathaaa! BOMBATHAAAA!

As cheesy as the first movies were, they were entertaining and by crom, I loved the music. Finding "The kitchen, the orgy" on google however, gives you a lot of unrelated results, though.

Wow, shit. Don't tell me there is romance in place of well deserved raping. The game that inevitably spawns from this will be the same shit. Hack n' slash clone of something else is my guess.
I'm not the biggest Conan fan, but I can't say I enjoyed the trailer. Hollywood is incapable of making an action movie that doesn't involve theatrical action scenes, generic musical scoring, and the same old presentation. Honestly, it almost felt like say a Pirates of the Caribbean trailer but without the comedy.

Compare that to the new movie's trailer. To me, the old one comes off so much more epic and unique.
After seeing the trailer, no way am I wasting my money on this POS.
The 1982 Arnie/John Milius film has flaws, but overall it still works really well. This looks terrible.
A few visual referenes to Frank Frazetta does not a good Conan movie make.
FIrst that horrid Solomon Kane movie, now this. The last few years have not been kind to Robert E Howard works when it comes to screen adaptions.

Delixe: link not quite the same without Arnold.

cogadh: That's a good thing for this movie. It's much more like the novels than Ahnold's movies ever were.
I am a Robert E howard fan, and this looks terrible.

macuahuitlgog: If it is Conan, then it can't be a really bad movie.
Never saw "Conan The Destoryer", did you?

I thought Solomon Kane was pretty good for what it tried to be. Even though it's completely inconsistent with the canonical lore, it provides a decent emulation of the stories' narration. The end battle was bad, but I quite liked the rest of the movie.

This "Conan" movie, OTOH...would you believe that almost none of the crew had actually read the original stories until the shooting had gone underway? From what I understand, the director's original intent is foremost to reboot the Conan movie franchise, and not to do justice to Howard. Which is sad, because Beyond the Black River will make one hell of a movie. Even The Devil in Iron is movie-script material, as long as the person at the helm knows what he's doing.

Probably. If movie-game trends are anything to go by, Paradox Entertainment (not to be confused with Paradox Interactive) is likely to cash in on the movie's initial success with a slipshod piece of work.

The Conan setting is just screaming for a Mount&Blade type of game, or a cRPG with plenty of choices and consequences and skill checks. Howard's vision of Conan is not just about brutal fighting scenes and sex, in spite of its chauvinistic, male-dominated setting. The world is depicted to be savage, but also filled with intriguing politics and colourful, atypical personae. It's practically a LARPer's wet dream.

I'll probably see this movie when it comes out but I don't really know what to expect. All I know is that it just won't feel the same without Arnold. I liked the first movie but don't remember too much of the second other than the fact that it wasn't as good and had a lot more fantasy elements in it.

Also, whoever made this remake needs to put in the scene about when Conan was asked "what is best in life?" similar to the original film. That scene in the original film was probably my favorite scene in the whole film.
