Glad I ditched soda.

Never a big fan of coke/pepsi but loved sprite. However aft era health scare last year I went to water and though it was hard at first after a few months you get used to it and don't really crave soda's.

I don't get the need to use coloring in so many food/drink products. I wonder what color Coke/Pepsi would be without the coloring - clear? Whats wrong with clear? I doubt less people would buy it. Like this bottle of unsweetened iced tea that I have in the fridge. The ingredients are "brewed tea (filtered water & black tea leaves), caramel coloring". Why throw the coloring in there??

Crystal Pepsi, man, it didn't do well. I doubt the lack of caffeine was the sticking point either.

When is there going to be an official report saying that living can lead to cancer?

Also, should there be a warning label placed on beaches warning people that sunlight can lead to skin cancer?

California is a bit of an interesting state, as there are very different cultural and political environments depending on where you go in it (and for reference, in terms of size it's a bit over 4 times as large as Hungary, so there's quite a bit of space for these different groups to spread out it). In some of the major metropolitan areas (Bay Area, San Diego, parts of LA) you will find quite a few people who fit your idea of indulging in "new-age crap", although they don't make up the majority of the state. Other areas of the state, for instance most of the valley, tend to be much more conservative and in some places downright redneck. While this results in politics in the state being divided and quite wonky, one of the overarching themes that often transcends this in state politics is that it tends to be incredibly populist, often with very poor results. A fairly unique aspect to California politics is that citizens can basically put forth their own laws (Propositions) that voters then consider directly, bypassing the state legislature. From this we get fun results like simultaneously mandating spending on a bunch of projects while forbidding any kind of tax increases to fund these projects. There are also plenty of regulations that get passed in such a way, such as the Prop 65 warnings that are now plastered on almost everything imaginable ("This glass of water contains chemicals known to the state of California to case cancer"). This kind of populism has also spilled into other areas of government not directly affected by the proposition system, which is what I suspect was behind the regulations in the linked article (basically legislators and regulators passing rules that they think the noisiest parts of the populace are in favor of, even if there is no rational basis for passing such rules).

Story is misleading, to say the least. You would have to drink HUNDREDS OF CANS or more PER DAY to generate cancer-producing levels. NO ONE DOES THAT!

They have a study showing a high dose classifies this as a carcinogen. That don't know what dose is dangerous. CA is pushing for a label before the FDA is done with there work. It is probably a silly law but if it is easy to replace with something safer why take the risk. I am sure its a cost thing, I am sure that it is also less money then any consumer would see at the register.

Yeah, Coke has already replaced it in California (and is working on replacing it globally). Pepsi hasn't. But from everything I've read, the levels you would need of this thing are astronomical.

Its considered one of the diseases of civilization. It simply has to do with the fact that a lot of the food we consume these days is manufactured in a factory. It's why their are more cases of cancer in a civilized country in comparison to a pre-industrial.

It's no conspiracy, just bad business.

Also, people live longer now than in the pre-industrial era, and most, if not all types of cancer are more common among the elderly than the young. It's hard to die of what we generally think of a condition of the elderly when the average life expectancy hovers around our midlife crisis mark.
