Fluofish: I get annoyed by most triple A scifi romps because 9O% of the budget goes to sfx and the other 10% to the actors.
The scripts are usually severely dumbed down, pretty faces are preferred over decent actors and a whole lot of standard-hollywood cliches must at all cost be included even if they would not make sense in the setting.

Err you are describing practically every movie made since the start of the 90s, singling out scifi seems a bit weird. Sure the budget brakdown in most movies is 50% actor / 50% effects or gimmicks but the principle is the same

This topic was about Scifi's. You cant expect me to drag in next j-action horror chicflik romcom staring Chuck Norris here.
I also do not mind that they prefer pretty people over good acting in all movies. Some movies don't need acting, for example porn or films with Steven Segal in it.
oh you bastard! You briefly made me think of porn with steven segal in it!!
He was an ex special ops guy who had a menial job as a plumber who came to unclog a womans pipe...

But that woman's husband was a mafia boss, and didn't want any visitors that day.
Primer. Low-budget film about a couple of engineers who build a time machine - pretty much a box which lets them travel back in time to the point at which it was switched on. Switch it on, climb in two hours later and you can climb back out again just after you switched it on.
Things get... convoluted. Damn good film though.
Also, Rocky Horror is amusing.

"Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" hehehehe

Chronicles of Riddick!
I'm most likely going to get ripped for that but I don't care goddamnit!! Conan in space with some rather Dune inspired (in my opinion anyway) visuals. Oh and the Riddick game was surprisingly good too.
Ghost in the Shell 1&2 are particularly good. While im on the topic of anime Akira is also veeery good. Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind is probably my favorite Gibli film. Wings of Honneamise and Lensman all class movies.
i actually really liked Gattaca too. I thought it might translate quite well to stage too. the remake of Solaris i didnt expect to like but did. Stalker (the film) is great .
and although this is meant to be a AAA boooo thread i loved the transformers movie it was just so much fun.
+1 on the Chronicles of Riddick, that is one of my "guilty pleasure" movies.
Well I enjoyed both the Riddick movies, really wish they'd make more. I loved the invasion part at the start of Chronicles mostly. Not sure if it's Sci-fi or horror really, but Sunshine was another one I enjoyed.
I'm not sure exactly how well known these movies are but I'll put em up and you can be the judge of that.
- Event Horizon (best horror sci-fi outside of the Alien series).
- Impostor (kinda cool sci-fi thriller).
- Dark City (kinda cool and weird mix of film noir and sci-fi).
Dark City was a good movie.
So was eXistenZ.

Ahh, that one was gross... Dunno what my reaction today would be, but I've seen it when I was about 11, that kind of 'My parents are not at home today, I can watch GROWN UP STUFF!'. Anyway, I was having nightmares for a few nights to come :D
Dark City was pretty cool...

Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow was a fun little film, had a very 40s serial feel to it
The Chronicles of Riddick wasn't bad, but I thought Pitch Black was horrible... could barely stand to watch the whole thing.
One movie I think is great and is underrated is Children of Men, if you haven't seen its definitely worth a netflix or download.
Ghost in the shell was pretty sweet as well...
And the most underrated awesome fest of a sci fi movie = Flash Gordon.
