Amazing demo. Glad I already pre-ordered the game.

lowyhong: Cool, which magazine are you reviewing for?

Website.
The demo is so finely polished. I didn't play all the way through though as I want my first play through to be as fresh as possible.
The only thing I was left wondering was if it would be better to have a full character body or not. Only given your stumbling around the absence of a body becomes all the more apparent. But then there's all the environmental interaction you do. Then I'm reminded of the freaky arms in Trespasser...

The whole game is. Just really well done. And gorgeous.
I don't think so. I like the immediacy of the first person perspective. I can't imagine the game any other way...or at least not nearly as terrifying.

No, I meant first person, but with a body. As opposed to being a disembodied head floating around. Like Mirror's Edge, for instance. Or Tresspasser, more accurately. And it's that game which makes me think that it would be a bad idea overall.
My main gripe from the demo is that a lot of objects in the environment can't be picked up. It feels a lot less interactive than Penumbra. For instance, I would expect to be able to light a candle and use it to illuminate the way. Also, while it's not hard distinguishing which boxes are carry-able, it is preferable to be able to move boxes that are slightly bigger than the ones you can carry. The same applies for a lot of other items too, such as bottles.

I thought the stumbling around was somewhat confusing due to a lack of body. I realized I was stumbling around, but I had no idea what my body was doing. I was wondering how my body was contorted to reach those weird positions.
I also found the motion blur distracting (I'm not sure if you could disable it).
Interestingly, I didn't find the encounter at the end scary (I screwed up and died so much it didn't make me worry anymore), although I was impressed that they moved things around after you died a few times (things in this case referring to the monster spawn location). However, I was somewhat freaked out during the first monster encounter, but it was nowhere near how freaked out I was during the first monster encounter in Black Plague. That was intense.
I did enjoy the demo a lot though.

Yeah, exactly. Not only would you expect the body to be very visible in those positions, but also there seemed to be no bones and joints hindering the flow of movement. It seemed very unnatural as a result.
Very impressive overall. But I felt it wasn't playing to its strengths on that point.

I think that's to do with the pace and nature of the game. Penumbra was expanded out of a physics tech demo and naturally everything was very interactive as a result. This game wants you to be very much more focussed on survival. Agreed on the crates though. I wanted to be able to shift them a bit too.

I want to get this game very badly, but I haven't finished the Penumbra games yet.
Methinks I will finish what I already have before buying, but this is a definite buy for me.
Message I just got from Frictional:
Dear pre-orderee,
On Wednesday next week it is time for the release of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. We are writing to you with the intent to inform you how to get the game.
Using your email address and the order number (starting with ST) you go to https://shelf.frictionalgames.com and login. If you do this before Wednesday, you will see an Amnesia: TDD section with only a release date, no download links, serial or Steam key. But, when you login on Wednesday you will see download links, serial and the Steam key.
If you login on Wednesday and for whatever reason do not see your download link, serial or Steam key. Email support@frictionalgames.com and we will do our best to help you as soon as we can.
What do you get in your pre-order?
You get 1 serial and 1 Steam key.
You get download links for Windows, Mac and Linux - All will run with the same serial.
You can use the Steam key to activate the Windows & Mac version of Amnesia on Steam. You do this in the Game menu in Steam, using "Activate a Product on Steam...".
You can do BOTH, that is you do not have to choose between Steam or our download, you get it all.
But please, as bandwidth cost and is limited, only download the game for the platform you intend to play it on. You can always get all the versions later, there is no download limit or time limit.
We Thank You for the support, as you will notice there is a developer commentary function in the game. This was added as we reached the 2000 pre-orders goal.
Hope you enjoy the game, if you do, please help us and spread the word!
Horrific, but sweet regards,
Frictional Games
Pretty sweet deal: the game for Windows/Mac/Linux and a Steam version. That's good service.
