The rumors are now afloat that Amazon is looking to get into the console market with an Android based table-top or console.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but people are putting 2 and 2 together (getting 5?) from the following

- Amazon is opening Amazon Game Studio (based on the buyout of Double Helix Studios)
- Lab 126 (who made Kindle) is apparently working on a new secret project
- Amazon is hiring a lot of AAA talents at the moment
- Amazon has been pressuring some Android game developers to add game pad support to their games

If this is true, it can be a very interesting market in the the years to come. If Amazon's views on self publication with books is carried over to a new console, it may become a platform to rival Steam in the Indie market, due to its already established user base.

...so far steam is pretty light on android games you know... To me that sounds more like they arent competing of same customers.

With steam you play pc/mac/linux/steamOS -games...with Amazon youd be playing phone/tablet games.

-> whole different category.

Maybe, and it is probably in that directing it will go if there is anything in it, so it becomes more of an competitor to something like Ouya than Steam. However, there are camps that thinks it is setting up to go against the likes of XboxOne, PS4 and Steam Box's.

Sounds kind of interesting, but it will most likely be running a fork of Android ala Kindle Fire and can be used only with Amazon's own market place. IE. not Google Play where "all" the games are at. I hope I am wrong ofc.

well, then amazon better have something super-mega-hyper-über-secret weapon in their sleeve. That trio is tough and atm Amazon doesnt have any edge over any of them that i can see or guess. Just buying few skilled professionals - or even whole studios dont magically translate into new consoles afterall.

Heck, amazon doesnt even have the ability to sell their PC bundles outside USA - they better start doing 180-degree turn with their gameselling services if you ask me.

I am skeptic, but ofcourse you never know - Maybe they will announce soon new amazing Amazon-Nintendo concept or something ;)

mm. I am also sceptical towards the actual market place, they do need to make it more global.

This looks like it's based on the OnLive controller for some reason.
interesting. more competition is good.
Good news for console fans. Nothing new for PC fans.
this is a very interesting development. thank you for posting this info.
I don't think it has a prayer of taking any sort of market share. It will be based on android games, so no Xbox/PS4 fan will want this device. Mom's that play Angry Bird's and the like would rather play with a touch tablet.
The only thing it could be useful for is if someone wants to use a controller for one of the more demanding Android games, but it sure as hell better work with a Kindle Fire and other tablets. No one is going to buy a dedicated android computer...unless they offer it for the magical $199 and below price point with a controller. And even that would be stupid purchase seeing as you can get a tablet for that price which would have HDMI-out and portable unlike this device.
For Amazon's sake, I hope it is just a Bluetooth/Wifi Controller with android support.

Niggles: Nothing new console for PC fans.
Had to make a correction on that. Seriously I don't know of any console gamer excited about the amazon console. It will just be a much lesser known Ouya which my store I work doesn't even sell 1 console a month. I predict this to tank faster than the 3D0 or Phillips CDI.

I'm sure this is going to be more than just for video games, it will also be used for playback of movies, TV shows, music, etc. from users' Amazon libraries. Maybe there'll be additional functionality like recording television shows as well.
