Niggles: Nothing new console for PC fans.

Briareos262: Had to make a correction on that. Seriously I don't know of any console gamer excited about the amazon console. It will just be a much lesser known Ouya which my store I work doesn't even sell 1 console a month. I predict this to tank faster than the 3D0 or Phillips CDI.
It may be the other way around tho, provided how widespread amazon is this new console sounds exactly like ouya, witch if it catches up some steam, could bury the actual ouya. But seeing how ouya faired it could just as well tank so... it could be some cash in tactic as well, witch kinda smells like.

As a pc gamer all this seems like a waste of time and resources to me but whatever...

Amazon is a weird company though, they do a truly enormous amount of business but they still aren't very profitable. You could almost say they're nothing but a distribution/postal service, something that is traditionally done by a state-owned company, and that's why they struggle to make the big bucks. This is why they are so desperate to expand into other areas, especially digital products, because digital products don't need to be stored in warehouses and most importantly they don't have shipping costs.
Amazon Fire TV announced:
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/03/technology/amazon-firetv-set-top-box.html
As I expected, it's a set top box that can also happen to play games.
So let me get this straight. Amazon is making a console centered around games that no console player wants to play and stripping those titles of the only aspect that makes them successful (portability)?
Sooo. Buy the box for 100$... then buy the content form the likes of your netflix via their sub.... Am i missing something here or it it a 100$ box that doesnt add anything over what you can do with a computer or smart TV of sorts?

Do be aware, I only read the first few paragraphs before losing interest. They really should put specifics a bit further up the list of priorities on these things
Missing a lot of features I would want, but at least it's not white.

HDMI 1.4 not 2.0
No 4K playback
No GigE only 10/100 ethernet
No WiFi AC only A/B/G/N
No HBO Go - Their competitors have it
No Bluetooth 4.0 only 2.1
No USB3 only one USB2 port
No internal/removable drive bay have to use the external USB port
Small Codec support

One cool feature if you have a Fire HDX is you can fling movies and music from the HDX to your TV if this is hooked up.

well, id still rather do my own micro itx set with amd APU's or something. would be bit more expensive, but far more better for my own needs anyways.
My blu ray player does everything (more actually) on the streaming media front that this thing does. So literally the only thing I would want it for is the Android gaming aspect. And I don't want it for that, at least not yet. They've hired some interesting developers so we'll see what comes of that, but as of right now it's a lot of phone games I have little interest in and would play on my phone if I did.

That said, do NOT doubt Amazon's marketing and customer base power, and their ability to put one of these fuckers in millions of homes. And do NOT doubt that streaming media and cheap or free digital games are the future of mainstream everything, they are. How long blu ray and other game styles can hold on is the only question.

This will change when they start using flying drones to deliver items to customers.

Haven't seen mention of Watchever support (German Netflix), but I assume it will have that. Chromecast that is about half the price, even with the horrid Euro conversion, already does that. Only advantage would be access to Amazons video service, which sucks majorly here. The gaming features of this box does not sound interesting at all.
Oh look, another shitty Android-based machine for streaming and "apps" that has nothing to do with the gaming software I want to indulge in. Yawn....
