Yes, the offline mode has become better although I would like to observe it a bit longer before I believe it. I still wonder what happens when the client updates though. Also some features of the games depend on being online and connected to Steam and ultimately when you want to re-install you'll need to be online. Steam is something in between one-time activation and always-on.
I don't want to judge it, but it seems to be the much more accepted form of DRM by the customers and therefore every publisher should copy the DRM scheme of Steam. Don't understand why Diablo III wants this bad publicity. Maybe they think that their game is so great, it will be bought with any kind of DRM.
