LGR has uploaded a video on the (basic) history of DRM. It is not going too deeply into the subject, only giving a general overview of the evolution of DRM through the ages, and why it was put into place. Still, this will probably be of interest to some people here (in particular those who did not have the privilage of experiencing manual look-up DRM and such other lovlie things)

Plz subscribe to him so that he gets enough income from ads, stops working and makes even more vids lol or maybe he already done that.
But he repeats the false information about having to be online to go to offline mode on Steam, meaning his research wasn't that good...

What happened to, you know, WRITING a god-damn article.

I'm not watching a bloody video as a source of secondary information.
LGR is a cool dude, with probably one of the biggest game collections I've seen for older computers like C64, Amiga, DOS.

I saw the video when it was uploaded, it's nothing super in depth at all but I found it interesting.
Loved that When he mentioned Lenslock it briught back lots of frustrated hours trying to use the bloody thing for Tomahawk on the spectrum,

DRM is evil evil and online only DRM is the worst hence why i wont buy Diablo 3 or the new Sim City.

He didn't claim that you have to be online to go offline, he said that games have to be ACTIVATED before offline mode will work. Which is absolutely correct.

Different mediums, and some things are quite simply better shown with moving pictures.

Such a great feature. I never have to bother with offline / online characters, managing saved games or even in-game settings, pick which characters I want to level online and which I don't, worry that my friends don't have my character's name resulting in us being unable to play together, and so on...

I just start the game, log in, and can switch between doing my playthrough of the story in a singleplayer fashion, and helping a friend with a particular boss in a matter of seconds.

I'm trying to figure out if this is parody, because I'm too polite to express the alternative...

Why would it be? And express what alternative? Please, say it, I 'really' want to know. :p

Care to enlighten the ignorant? I didn't know yet that this was false information. I don't want to stir up another Steam discussion, I'm just curious how it works, because when a friend of mine moved and didn't have internet access for a week or more, he wasn't able to start Trine 2 in Offline Mode. He got an error message about Steam failing to connect for an update or something and was offered to play the game in Offline Mode, but every time he clicked on it, the client tried to go online again and gave him the same error message over and over.

EDIT: I think he found a solution to the problem in the end, maybe by killing the client's process or something? But in any case, it was an annoyance and It didn't seem that easy and fool-proof to activate Offline Mode and put the client to rest for someone not really tech-savvy when it comes to Steam and who's only registered to play his game because the retail version lured him there ...
