JMich: P.P.S. What program do you use for creating the ramdrive?
imDisk, which also is good for mounting isos and the like, takes away an extra piece of software just for mounting cd's.

edit: And diskpart also fails to recognize ramdrives.

Maighstir: Yeah, I must have remembered wrongly from my investigations from when I was installing Arch. I now cannot find any reference at all to it being required as the first partition. I don't know why that false information was so thoroughly stuck into my brain.
I was fairly certain the boot partition need to be among the first X number of terabytes. It appears this is also false. Still, not sure how much I would rely EFI on say partition 5 starting at 4.3 TB successfully booting across a range of motherboards.

I was able to 'fix problems with starting Windows' using the USB flash installer while the other drives were disconnected. This created the boot partition in the right place this time. Given that you were the most helpful I marked your post as the solution.

Thanks!

You're welcome, I did get a bit worried that I had been talking completely out of my arse after people corrected me a couple times. I mean, my posts not contributing to the discussion is par for the course in most cases, but I don't like to give false information which in the best case may just send people off on a track that just takes them further from a solution.
