I mean MMORPGs have already done it with City of Heroes and DC Universe Online and they can serve as a basic template for how to make a Superhero RPG, because those games have amazing character creation.

Basically have the character creation of DC Universe Online/City of Heroes.

Have the Open World be filled with meaningful content and side activities like Grand Theft Auto 5 and what not.

And have it be as story driven and cinematic as Witcher 3 and Mass Effect.

And BAM there you have the best possible Superhero RPG.

I'd really rather if capeshit died a very quick death and never came back
You're already close with :

- Freedom Force [edited name]. It's a bit of a squad-rts, its story and missions are predefined, but you still level your powers the way you see fit.

- Saints Row, say, 4, that is more of a matrix setting, but goes over the top with your powers, and is fully free-roaming.

- Just Cause 2 (and 3), that feel like a batman (then ironman) simulation at times, given you main tool, a fantasticaly unrealistic grappling hook, and, later, some jetpack gliding device.

Some people add mods and skins to make SR and JC actually look like you're playing a superhero. So this may give you a bit of what you seek, while you wait for the proper fully implemented theme.

Ah, also, Agents of Mayhem may also be drifting closer to your thing, but I haven't played it.

If you mean a licensed RPG based on established universes like DC etc, probably at some point but for now devs seem more interested in making them action packed with just a tiny amount of rpg elements.

I just personally don't care since i'm not into superhero and comics stuff at all, i find it completely uninteresting but i know many people who do like it.
Currently only Saints Row 4 kind of fills that niche. And that is more by accident than intention.

Everything else lacks something (usually the character customization).

AFAIK nothing for single players is in the making (or ever has been done aside the before mentioned SR4). MMOs in various alpha/closed beta development stages that touch that subject would be:

- City of Titans (traditional here-and-now SH setting)
- Valiance Online (slightly futuristic SH setting)
- Ship of Heroes (far future; kind of Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes)
Soooo... basically "Modern Trends™-The Game"?
I wouldn't touch it with a pole. The worst of modern gaming plus the apex of commercial cinema. Wow.
Also, games should stop being "cinematic". It is not an achievement for the media, just a bastardization of movies.

I'd rather have a blast from the past: https://www.gog.com/game/freedom_force

My goodness that is the most hipster statement I have ever seen.

Ah. Ah.
We have a smart one here. Did I perchance called you names when I stated that I don't like your idea? No. So hold your "goodnesses" and "hipsters" or stop complaining starting from the next time you write a thread like "WHERE DE GUD OLD GARMEZ GOG" and people use... impolite appellatives towards you. Just a tip for civil convivence.

I think you meant Freedom Force.

Indeed.

I just got salty. Cuz I made this thread and it sounds like a good idea, and all I get is essentially "no thanks, I don't like Superheroes"

What kind of reaction did you expected by your, sorry, jerk comment in a topic asking about Superhero RPGs?
Look up SEGS (Super Entity Game Server). It's a City of Heroes private/local server emulator, and in theory when it's finished there might be a way to create your own CoH server rebalanced to make everything soloable, then just play on it all by yourself.

I think you have a bit of contradiction here. Witcher and ME story are character based, your options in castomising your protagonist are quite limited there. Yes, I know in Baldur's Gate or Arcanum you have both character creation and deep story, but sitll the more wide range of options for character customization you have the harder is to make personal story for such game.
