I think giving people a choice should be much higher up the list of things to do than taking away choices from the unwilling. I dont see anything wrong with giving people additional fully optional choices. The ignore list stuff also works in other forums. And the "friend" kinda algorithms are in use kinda "everywhere on the net" - like most recommendation systems, Google search results etc.
Also: People are quite different. The point of such a system is that people can choose/customize their crowd and their rules. IMO such a system would be a complete solution to the whole "problem of forum moderation" if implemented properly. Unfortunately currently (at least in EU, operators are forced to moderate everything etc) legislation is so bad that its not really viable to try to make something like that unless one wants to "go all the way" and make it as P2P which is many times harder to implement properly than doing it server based.

No, it isn't easy for people to ignore people/things they don't like, because if it was, they would. lol

I think there are a lot of people out there who are not here because there arent any such tools. Or rephrasing: There are people who do not like the sometimes somewhat hostile environment here. And if they could customize their crowd they would be more willing to join.

I don't want people to not be able to use such systems, and am sorry if it seemed that way. I just want people to not be encouraged to use that by default at any minor slight and thus become too reliant on it and too quick to use it instead of other methods.

I didn't mean she was insulting directly... just poorly timed and bad taste, hence faux pas. There was NO reason to take up the "fight".

Cordial or not, I won't ever take it to any account; you can't reason with someone having certain feministic views, and she never respond directly in a timely discord. Believe me I've tried long ago and I was neither insulting nor attacking her. For all I know she doesn't like me because I'm direct and ask questions... I don't care.

Couldn't people then just as easily un-mute someone(that tool only makes it one more step to un-ignore someone)? If so it likely wouldn't help people ignore others much more than just ignoring them without it.

If that is the case then why don't they dl the tool and keep using the site. (The tool is there for people to use, but not many use it) Are you trying to say that if people were saved a few minutes to dl it that they'd use it more/be more likely to use the forums?

Agreed...though with the way people are raised lately more and more people are becoming easily upset over minor slights, so it's(sadly) to be more expected in general.

Fair enough, but I think if one has opposing views but tries to express them more cordially that should at least be given some consideration when deciding how to reply...but that's just me. :)

That's true for obsessive-compulsives, but for "normies", twit filters can make forums with inadequate moderation, tolerable.

Opinions are like a box of chocolate from others; you never know what you get, and it gets sticky and stale pretty fast, and then you get sick of it... until next day :p

You can already do that by hiding some bad posts with a click for most people....many who derail/etc don't do it for long usually.

I understand some might need such, though, and respect that......I just think it shouldn't be the go to first pick solution if other things would work just as well(such as mental ignore).

Depends on what chocolate.....if it's those cruddy ones then I can understand, but if it's cremes.....let's just say i'd do a ton of things for a box of those suckers. :D

"Bad" is subjective, so unless you're neutral re negative rep and low-rated posts, I think an ignore function is a hell of a lot fairer.

1. You likely know what I meant by bad/that I meant what one finds bad. ;) 2. It encourages weakness so I am against pushing people to use it, just as I am against doctors handing out some things like anti-biotics like candy. :)

Which "other methods"? Example: If someone uses vulgar language and I dont like it then I dont really see any "other methods" which I would expect to work.

Speaking for myself: I would be very unlikely to use such a tool due to security threat. You have to trust the author or if its open source check it yourself. Thats a major drawback.
For most ppl in this situation however the biggest drawback is that they probably dont know such a tool even exists if it is not part of the forum itself. I am more talking about ppl who arent familiar with the forum and get a bad "second impression" than some old regulars who happened to collect a personal enemy whom they want to make go away.
