All it does is get you certain games depending on how much you gather. The extra does nothing.

If you want an easier way of understanding it, think of it like this:
Spend $5, you get Spelunky for free.
Spend $15, you get Gabriel Knight for free.
Spend $30, you get Dreamfall Chapters for free.
That's it. There is literally nothing else to it.
Liar! The leftover XP gets distilled into black market level up potions and is sold to adventurers that need that quick pick me up to defeat that certain level locked boss.
