tinyE: Anyone here played Far Cry 2 and remember any of it? I just started and I'm already confused. :P
I am one of the few people in the universe who actually liked Far Cry 2. (I liked Far Cry 1 as well, but for different reasons.)
People complain about respawning enemies, lots of driving, the malaria thingie etc., so just my five cents over them:
Respawning enemies: Yes, you will be facing the same enemies over and over again, when you drive through the same checkpoints in the game. However, the respawning is not based on time nor "just drive a few meters and the enemies respawn". The respawning happens when you enter a new (sub)map. You can think of it that way that all enemies and mundane items (like healthpacks and ammo) are reset when you exit a map, ie. drive over the map border. As long as you stay in the same map, such respawning doesn't occur.
I didn't mind this respawning that much for these reasons:
- I personally consider Far Cry 2 more like a GTA 3 game in African setting, where it is expected enemies will respawn. Nobody complains in GTA games that there seems to be an endless supply of enemy gang members or hostile policemen, and the streets don't become completely empty of any hostile characters, as long as you kill all of them once.
- As the enemies respawn, so do ammo and health packs. In some cases I used that to my advantage when I wanted to get more ammo and health packs, claiming them repeatedly from the same places.
- You don't always have to fight the (same) enemies, over and over again. Quite often it is a plausible tactic to just drive through an enemy outpost in highspeed, or avoid it altogether by driving offroad or via a detour.
"Too much" driving: Why do people complain about this?!? I loved driving around in Far Cry 2, with the scenery changing from a desert to savannah to jungle. Not that different how I enjoy driving around in GTA games.
Malaria: Yeah, every now and then the screen goes yellow (the malaria effect), which is easily fixed by pressing one button on the keyboard in order to get a malaria pill, and the effect goes away. So what is the fuss, why are some people so overly aggravated by this?
In a one or couple times of the game story, you have to do some special mission(s) in order to replenish your malaria pill supply, but so what?
While I do think the whole "malaria effect" is kinda pointless for the rest of the gameplay, I still don't understand why some seem to consider it as some kind of game-breaking mechanism or something, considering how easy it is to "fix".
Frankly, my only real complaint of Far Cry 2 was its (lack of) music. While games like Far Cry 1 and Crysis 2 have tremendously good soundtracks (at least the intro theme), Far Cry 2 was seriously lacking in the music department. FC2 just had some generic and faint "African ethnic howling and drumming" music here and there, IIRC.
However, I seem to recall you never cared much for game music, so probably this doesn't matter to you anyway...
