I accomplished that with a controller I bought on Amazon for $25. :P

the real reason valve sunk money in the steam machines was because it was a back up plan in case microsoft went flippy and turned windows in to a walled garden
that didnt happen
so now its a machine with out a market

considering windows 10 however things may change
but currently the steam machines are pretty much shite and dead in the water

When I read about this arstechnica.com article yesterday I decided to go to 3 of my local GameStops

In that 7 months time frame I asked all 3 of those GameStop's managers how many Steam Machines sold in their stores, 2 of them said none of them sold at all they were just sitting there, the 3rd GameStop manager said he managed to sell only 1 Steam Machine in that 7 months.

They also seem to feel like bridges have been burned between GameStop and VALVe. The managers also said they heard worse stories all over the country.

I went to a Best Buy and the Best Buy manager told me that they only sold 10 in that 7 months.

I think a total of only 10,000 Steam Machines have sold world wide. 20,000 if I'm going tops.

The Alienware Alpha or whatever that is sold has Windows 10 on it.

I see a lot of people who asked friends about the Steam Machines wanting to replace their consoles and they are told they don't have Day 1 video games released for sale on it because of SteamOS or Linux and they are asked what's the point? And they decide to purchase a PlayStation 4 (PS4) or Xbox One.

Due to GameStop, not the CEO but the managers feeling bridges burned between them and VALVe. I do not see the Steam Machines being a long term bet. VALVe will just quit having them be sold in the next 2 years.

VALVe needs to go back to developing and improving software you know like video games.

if valve launched the steam machines with half life 3 and portal 3 it would have sold like gangbusters

Well one things for sure, the 3 GameStop managers feel like bridges have been burned between GameStop and VALVe in terms of business to sell hardware, but for selling software like video games they feel like that's what VALVe is good at and should just sell video games instead at GameStop.

I think unless valve can secure day 1 Linux release for AAA games steam machine won't be appealing to anyone. I read many discussion asking if they should buy one and always answered 'just build a PC and buy the controller'

At this point if VALVe keeps on developing Steam Machines to manufacturers and it doesn't sell like 1 million or more in the next 2 years and doesn't end up developing brand new video games to sell, slowly but surely people will leave Steam.

Reading on neogaf people who start saying now that CD Projekt RED is better they have their own store front and develop and sell video games.

Imagine one day gog.com being as big as Steam and there still no Half-Life 3 sold on Steam by then and CD Projekt RED has Cyberpunk 2077, some new video game IP, Cyberpunk 2100, another new video game IP, maybe bought out some classic old abandoned video games to develop new sequels to sell for them all on gog.com.

Meanwhile it is the year 2025 and still no Half-Lfie 3 for sale on Steam...

Scrap the machines, focus on the controller (which is apparently very good)

It's the same conundrum facing Linux gaming in general (and GOG as well): people want to play specific big name title X which is only available on platform A. Developers of title X don't want to bring it to platform B because 'too small market share and, eh, so much work to port'. Ergo, platform B's market share cannot grow.
A gross exaggeration on my part, but you get the picture.

The amount of units sold is only poor in relation to the investment that Valve put into the project, it's very early days and let's face it the Steam Machines are only really going to interest a certain type of person but Valve are in it for the long run and it could end up being quite viable as a VR/ gaming machine but it's not something that would ever appeal to me.

Er...could somebody explain to me what these things are? I'm familiar with the controller, but these, I never heard about.

I'm laughing. I already knew this was coming. This will teach Valve not to do anything unnecessary.
