GR00T: From what I understand, 10 is their last OS. They won't be coming out with a new one after this, only updating and upgrading 10 from here on.
I highly doubt that. Even a major service pack won't do the job as well as a fresh build can. No OS is immune to the ravages of time. Even with unlimited updates. Just look at XP as an example. Their most supported OS to date, but it was still pretty past it by the time that Windows 7 arrived.

Plus, you know how untidy Microsoft are with updates. Can you really imagine the mess Win 10 will be in five years from now? Doesn't bear thinking about.

snowkatt: doubt it unless there is a massive massive backlash and ms suddenly backpedals
id rather have windows 8.1 then 10
Yeah, they hit a high point with Win 7 and have been in free fall ever since.

.11 even ;)

I'd go with Windows 7 i think. Its a pretty decent OS, and thats coming from a Mac user ;)

LordTarin: I've been stubbornly clinging to XP for a while and I'm ready to upgrade now. I have a new PC but I don't know which OS to use. I have access to free copies of Windows 7, 8, and 10 through my school. Which one should I go with?
Go with either Windows 7 or a Win7 / Linux Dual-Boot.

Win 8 / 8.1 is just another M$ failure (like ME, and for a lot of people, Vista back in the days)

But either way, just stay verrrryyyyyyy far away from Windows 10 (there a quite a lot of threads both here and all over the Internet on how Win10 tries to secretly install M$ Spyware on your PC, and I don't think either you, or anyone else would want that).
low rated
Windows 7 is solid and Windows 10 is honestly an improvement over 7 if you fiddle with it a bit to disable some of its annoying features, not to mention will continue to receive updates and patches.

Contrary to the mass hysteria perpetuated here and elsewhere it's absolutely fine for most people who have upgraded, myself included.

There's also many threads all over Internet about reptilians that are enslaving humans. And I don't think either you, or anyone else would want that.

well thats just prime
id rather make my own mind up if i want to upgrade or not instead of having it shoved down my throat
or be forced
unless you cal skylake not supporting windows 7 and 8
nagware
making it an optional windows update in the update centre ( optional for now )
and sneakily downloading even when you tell gwx no or are not interested the instal files to your pc not forced

and windows 10 might be all well and good and valhalla but there are stil too many bugs and problems
too much that is still not supporterd
im sure tarm III wil be thrilled to hear that everything is well and good for you while he has a black screen with a cursor
and he isnt the only one

i dont care for windows 10
i dont care for its dubious spyware and before you start about being able to turn it off there are indications it still spies
i dont care for forced updates
i dont care for the possibility that it wil turn in to a service
i dont care that it might become adware or freemium
i dont care that ms might start pushing ads at me right on my desktop
and i sure as hell dont care that they try to force it on me

lots of possible's and maybes in that list ? sure btu with ms's recent dirty underhanded practises i wouldnt be a bit surprised if they did all that and more

so its great that windows 10 works for you but you can keep it i dont want it and im sure im not the only one

compared to windows 10 even 8.1 is desirable
id rather have 8.1 then 10

7, or, depending on your hardware, 8.1u1 if you need 8 to get the full capabilities of it. If going 8, you're definitely going to want ClassicShell to make it resemble a usable OS.

Avoid the "we own your computer, not you" known as Windows 10.

Yeah and it might lock some out of their computers. Far from everyone manage to resolve that one as quick as I did with help from here.
The only game I've had an issue (that I own) with Windows 10 is Unreal Tournament 2k4. However, all you need to do is change a line in the config file and it works without a hitch. People also say Majesty Gold HD doesn't work with 10, but I've been playing it for hours at a time no probs.

10 is pretty sweet for me, and it will be all the more when DX12 is common place... doesn't Ashes of the Singularity support DX12? Or was that a dream?

Randalator: But he should still get a different OS from his school because till July 29th he can upgrade to 10 for free. He'd be wasting one free OS if he got 10 from his school.

GR00T: How do you figure that? If he upgades from 7 to 10, he'll still only have 1 free operating system. It's not like he'll be able to use the old 7 on another machine after upgrading.
That's not what I meant. By doing what I said, he will have a permanent CHOICE of two different OS. He will not be able to use both OS at the same time (at least not legally), but since the 7 license doesn't get invalidated by the upgrade, he will be able to choose which OS suits his personal preferences and requirements best and to switch back and forth between 7 and 10 if he is so inclined.

For example he might initially prefer 7 but an unsupported hardware upgrade might force him to switch to 10 later. Then some time down the line he might switch to Linux and use the 7 license on older hardware for a more backwards compatible GOG gaming rig.
Download all of them, test on a virtual machine if possible.

Personally, I would recommend all of them for different reasons: Win 7 for stability and ease of use as is much more established system by now however support is likely to being drop in a while; 8.1 for being faster and adding a lot of improvements "under the hood" coming from 7, however some interfaces and design choices can put you off (if you care that much about it) and finally 10 for the latest improvements and support from now on, the negatives being MS dicking around with how us users interact with the system, namely some privacy settings (can be easily dealt with) and forced updates (can be dealt with third party programs).

Have fun! :)

You have to do change the same line in some other games, UT2k3 and Desert Thunder come to mind.
But yeah, generally Win 10 is generally great, probably best Win OS ever.

Ashes is already testing DX 12 in Steam Early Access since august and there is even a test on Ashes running DX 11 vs DX12.
http://www.techspot.com/review/1081-dx11-vs-dx12-ashes/page4.html

Currently there is not much difference and for some hardware, running on DX11 is better then DX12.

As for OS wise, Ashes is developed by Oxide Games, which is heavily involved in Khronos group creating Vulkan, the next version of OpenGL and Ashes is confirmed for Linux.

So I would be dual booting Window 7 and Linux by the time comes as I don't like my computer rebooting when I am playing a game halfway or the game minimized so the OS can show me try office 365 advertisement and all the spyware.

I actually dual boot Win7 & Linux for maybe 1/2 year, then my hard disk dies recently and is in a rush for a working OS. Would install Linux some time, but with the announcement, plans to buy a new laptop before the processor is not officially supported.

Well, it's what Microsoft itself was reported as saying, indicating they'e moving to Windows 'as a service'.

Check here

and And here.

It's been fairly widely reported. I've not seen that MS has backpedaled on it.

neurasthenya: and finally 10 for the latest improvements and support from now on, the negatives being MS dicking around with how us users interact with the system
The 'newest and greatest' is often overrated. There's an old bible saying from Solomon: 'there's nothing new under the sun'. There's word processors, games, media, music, and tons of other things that have been around for decades and have worked just fine up til now. As for technology, i remember ISA cards working just fine be they modems, sound cards, or video cards. PCI was all the rage, and yet somehow i had fewer troubles with ISA cards for a long time until i got a new computer motherboard that didn't have ISA slots and i was forced to move on, during which there was plenty of PCI options available.

I'd honestly suggest against getting 10, if at the least for a couple years for major bugs and problems to be resolved. However as things are progressing, i'm only certain 10 will get worse. And all for what? USB 3.0 & DX12? To be a spoilsport, you never had/needed them before, why are they suddenly a must-have that you never had before?

Maybe that's just too much thinking going on in my brain...
