Hi Guys,

Really hoping someone will know what I'm talking about here as it's been driving me nuts! I'm looking for an old space sim that came as part of one of those huge demo discs that they used to send out in the 90's. It was super simple but very addicting. Its graphics kinda resembled the game Asteroids. Simple geometric outlines against a black background. The objective was to colonize the various planets scattered around the map before the AI could. Like I said before it was super simple and the entire game probably consisted of 3 or 4 fighter ships racing around the map trying to claim territory. Once you landed on a "planet" which was nothing more than a thin lined circle with a colored square in the middle to indicate who had claimed it, your home planet would send out a transport ship that would bring supplies to the new colony. The longer you owned a planet the more advanced it became. I don't remember much else about it expect you could choose the personality of the other AI ships in the setup faze of the game. Things like "methodical" or "aggressive"

Will try to post anything else that I can remember. Like I said it's been awhile...

thanks!!

I don't think so. If It's the same game I'm thinking of the graphics were just coloured lines..
You had a little triangle for a spaceship and you flew it by pressing a button to move, but you would keep moving in the same direction so you had to spin round and fire your boosters again to slow down. Landing on the planets was really hard, I always used tp just crash into them and die (exploding into a load of pixels)

Yes!! That's the game I'm talking about!! Landing was a beast! Without a doubt the hardest part of the game ha ha It's not STARS or Ascendancy although the graphics kinda resembled STARS! Still not sure what it was although I can still hear the sound of my ship exploding after an unsuccessful landing attempt ha ha

Sounds like Gravity Well? Except that has more complex graphics than what I'm imagining from your description.

Edit: I see, actually there were multiple versions:

Hmm. I do think that's it, though the version I (and the OP presumably) remember was much more basic. Possibly an early precursor or a freeware version or something?
The description sounds right, and the name seems familiar too...
The YouTube link wouldn't play for me so I can't tell if it is or not.

Here's another link to the older version, on the Internet Archive:

That's it!! Gravity Well version 3.2! haha You got it SCPM! Thanks for your input as well adaliabooks. I've noticed post ratings and mark as solution options within the framework of the discussion page. Is there a way I can input feedback to help your guy's scores or something? Noob here...

Also do either of you know where I might download said version 3.2?

If you hover over SCPM's post there should be a button in the top left corner that says Mark as Solution or something. And in the top right corner there is a rate this post box where you can +1 any posts you like or found useful.

No problem, it's a game I instantly remembered when you started describing it and I was curious to know it's name too as it has crossed my mind a few times over the years wondering what it was :)

Edit: I think the internet archive link seems to have a download - though I'd question it's legality as the game stills seems to be being updated and sold (which is even stated on that page)

This seems to be the modern version of the game, though I'm not sure if it is the same thing or not...

The Internet Archive do try to be legal, so they most likely do have a license to distribute that version of the game. It also says "License freeware", so I'd guess either one of those is a mistake or another version is being sold while the old DOS version that Archive.org provides is free.

EDIT: It seems the downloadable zip files contain shareware versions (but I haven't checked thoroughly, just a quick scan of the text files).

Rottencorpsex: This?
Looks like the C-64 version, with that crappy graphics. There should be a video of the Schneider/Amstrad CPC 464 version, it looked much better. :-)

Ah, that should be alright then. I just looked quickly and didn't read it properly, but I know there used to be some doubts about the legality of some of the Internet Archive stuff.

I would imagine the version I remember was the shareware one; it came on a disc with twenty or thirty other games (none of the others which I can remember, though I believe there was a Mahjong one)
