With twelve participants hosted by Mat of the MatCat duo, everything about this event screams insane awesomeness and awesome insanity.

As in the previous edition of the tournament, the awesome Mat of MatCatPlays will be your hosts.

We will also be starting with two teams of trigger-happy streamers ready to cause some ‘splosions! Team Red will feature Outstar, Piranjade, Donis, Senteria, Sharien Radaik, and Metal Addict, while Team Blue will feature Memories in 8bit, GeordyJones, ScreamingJoypad, Ryusenshu, Judas, and VideoGameCarnage.

A special extra player has been drawn from willing participants in the chat - congrats to ChrisTX4, who will be joining the killing fun!

Not my cup of tea but it should silence some of the "GOG no longer sells any more good old games" assholes. :P

micktiegs_8: only streamers get to face off? Well, that's a bummer. Lucky I have third world internet, because I'd actually want to join in otherwise.
Yup, that's the policy, apparently, same as last time.

Given that A) I'm not allowed to participate myself, B) the participants are mostly people I've never even heard of, and C) I have to watch it in its entirety at a specific point in time, I really can not drum up any personal interest in this tournament whatsoever.
Always the worst times to watch these things.

It's a shame to hear that. However, one member from the public / viewer base was given the opportunity to participate this time. The slot was raffled off during Donis' stream last night, and the winner was ChrisTX4. GOG tweeted about this in advance, and also it was mentioned during many streams in the days leading up to the draw. So you *could* have had a chance to participate. Maybe next time then? ;)

Also, the reason why Streamers dominate the roster is purely for entertainment value. I used to play against competition UT players and I can tell you that when they are in the "zone" they usually don't talk, and remain very focused on the game (understandably). Having 12-14 people intensely concentrating and not really talking would probably diminish the entertainment value, compared to streamers who are quite experienced in broadcasting, entertainment and keeping things fresh for the audience.

That said: don't count out many of the streamers and participants in this tournament either. I can guarantee that some of them could give a seasoned UT Pro a run for their money. Even Epic Games and the UT Community have supported this event :)

Barry_Woodward: We're still missing Unreal Tournament 3: Black. Come on, GOG!

Seriously.

UT3 would have been a great game for Epic to bring here for the Galaxy launch. Such a wasted opportunity.

But.... We raffled out a "Wild Card" to bring in somebody from the audience and we have Judas with us this time...
We tried to take the criticism from last time into account. :-(
*sad now*
Here's the recipe to increase your chances of participating in the next UT tournament (if that will happen):
1. start watching the twitch.tv/gogcom streams and participate in live chat as a responsible community member regularly
2. note when the announcement goes out for any tournament community slots raffles
3. be there for that raffle, participate and win

Alternatively (although arguably harder) you could follow these steps:
1. start streaming games on your own channel, build a community, a unique style that you think is a good match for the GOG philosophy, also, having commented uploads on Youtube could also help
2. (optional, but it helps) see step #1 from the previous paragraph
3. after a while, request to become one of the regular streamers on twitch.tv/gogcom by filing out this form (already linked from EVERY news update of the Twitch schedule): http://goo.gl/forms/rpguExS11t
4. get selected to be part of the streamer team, do streams, then there's a very high chance you can request for a player spot in the next UT tournament

Good luck!

Yeah, I'm a bit bummed too, I thought this was going to be an event the entire gog community could participate in.

I don't even care all that much for FPSers but, I was going to buy the game just to join in and blast (and be blasted by) my fellow goglodytes.

Wishbone: C) I have to watch it in its entirety at a specific point in time
These streams are being recorded and uploaded to GOG's Twitch channel, so you can watch it afterwards at any time you want.

Usually I'm not into this whole streaming thing either, but I played some of those recordings in the background during work and I have to admit, some of those guys (and gurls) are quite entertaining to listen to. Especially the developer interviews are worth listening to, even if you don't care for the actual gameplay. My advice: Treat it like a podcast and only pay attention to the audio. Check out Outstar interviewing Tim Schafer while playing Broken Age.

Yes, only on Twitter and Twitch, neither of which I follow. And one slot out of 13 is not enough to raise my interest, sorry.

Now, if you did a tournament for forum regulars, announcing it on the forum well in advance, and giving people a chance to qualify somehow, maybe through a series of qualification matches, you know, an actual tournament, then the participants would be people I cared about, perhaps even myself. If you then also recorded the stream and made it available later on, so people didn't have to watch it live, but could watch it whenever they had the time, then I'd be interested.

Live streaming in a global community seems like a failed idea from the start, to be honest. No matter when you stream, you are going to be excluding large parts of your potential audience.

But hey, I'm a grumpy old man, and if you believe that enough people are interested to make it worth your while, you certainly don't have to take my curmudgeonly opinions into account. You don't exist to serve me, and as such I'm not complaining. I'm merely telling you the reasons why I personally have no interest in your events. It annoys me, true, because I love UT2004, and I wish you'd chosen ways of doing it that would allow me to enjoy it, but I'm one guy, and I'm not so conceited that I think I should dictate what you should and shouldn't do.

That's good, I was not aware of that. That certainly makes the whole Twitch thing at least useful.

What's a "streamer" when it's not accompanying balloons and party hats?

In other words, this is for hardcore Twitch-heads only. No others need apply.

I feel there's a hidden message I just can't put it together... Not enough imagination at the moment :)
