Some classics age like fine wine, sometimes with even better results. Some others... not so much. Here, let's talk about the games that are way past their prime, what used to be considered good games back then but did not stand the test of time for whatever reasons.

I'll start by talking about Wolfenstein 3D. While groundbreaking for it's time, I'm afraid to say that it's far too limited for a FPS especially when compared to later (and better) games such as DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D. Most levels looked the same, and it it didn't help that there were no platforms, no heights, nothing. It was just one big flat level after another, and the lack of a map feature really made it hard to navigate the bigger levels. The controls weren't advanced enough to allow for effective strafing, which makes the game feel more like a chore to control than it should for those used to Quake and later games (you couldn't turn while strafing). Honestly, the only cool feature about the game was its stealth element; sneaking past the guards and such was always a rush!

But yeah, I've tried and tried, but I just can't get into this game anymore. What about you guys? Are there any games you've stopped playing because it just didn't age very well? Share your thoughts.

What term? Sorry for any offenses, in any case.

I'm sure those people are heartbroken.

How ever will they go on with their livers sans your approval?

He's a troll and a pirate and refuses to shop here so don't pay him any mind.

As for the topic, I'm with you on Wolf 3D. I also throw out, and I hate to admit this, the original StarCraft. I went back to play it and there are too many things missing that have become intricate to RTS, like production cues and formations. Not having stuff like that just makes the game too much of a pain.

Even though I love it, I´ll say Mass Effect.
Tried it recently, but just couldn´t get into it.

A better title would have been:

The Gamers That Didn't Age Well Thread!

Certainly I would be one, can't stand most features of modern gaming, grumble grumble. In my day ... mumble... bleeding clients, grumble...bleeding social gaming, mumble.

"This game didn't age well", which is patently false as games don't age, only people do.

You haven't aged well either, if you'd prefer use of the "proper" term.

It's usually the old games that don't age well. Especially the really old games. All of my brand new games have aged very well.
final fantasy 7

yeah it ...no
just the graphics are dismal and the story is disjointed
the translation is pretty bad and its hard to get invested in it again

the random encounters are pretty bad too and i hate random encounters and grinding

Good thing Final Fantasy IX exists. It's still a beautifully crafted game!

You didn't address my point.

I mean you could go to Egypt and say "Well these monuments have aged badly, look that cat thing even lost it's nose", but that's because weather and age have actually degenerated it. But video games are purely digital and they're objectively exactly the same as they were the day they were released. Therefore, they haven't aged because their appearance hasn't changed. It many cases it's actually the opposite, fan-made or official patches have increased the resolution and/or graphics.

The term is fine - pretty sure we all know what the OP is getting at, even if it wasn't worded exactly the way one wants.

I'll posit that it CAN be the games themselves that don't age well. For instance, compare Railroad Tycoon and Railroad Tycoon II. Very similar games as far as the premise, building mechanics, economic model, and goals go, yet the second one would be much more familiar to today's younger game player because of the graphical and interface differences between the two games.
