Breja: Ok, this is pretty wild. Apparently there are multiple new Trek shows in early (very early might-not-happen-at-all) development, and that includes a The Next Generation sequel with Patrick Stewart returning as Picard.

Vitek: Stewart is 77 and this is not even getting realised yet. I get a feeling that he could be a bit too old to be Starfleet captain in this one.
Don't get me wrong, I love him but would he be able to handle role of captain? I think he would have to have even bigger hands-off role than before.
If Harrison Ford could return to Han Solo at 73 I don't see why Stewart would be to old to return as much less action-oriented Picard at around 80. But you're probably right he wouldn't return as the captain, at least not full time as a main character. I always thought the best way to go is to have a new crew and either Picard or Riker return in a role similiar to Admiral Forrest on Enterprise, just with a bit more screentime.

drmike: *shrug* I saw 5 minutes of Discovery, watched this spinning along the front to back axis space ship that makes my head hurt over the physics and never went back.

RWarehall: At least they are acknowledging it was crap, even if the press release uses PR speak to claim it was successful. One does change showrunners like that if you truly believe it was working...
Did they? Like I said, I didn't pay it any attention.

WHAT??? Picard is my all-time favorite Captain, and this would be absolutely awesome (other than, I guess, no Data). Anything that tells what happens after the Dominion War would be great, honestly. Of course there's the fear of over-exposure, which already killed Star Trek once and is damaging other franchises (I'm looking at you, Star Wars). But... more Picard!

Well, Majel Barrett is dead, and can't be the computer's voice anymore, so I think it would be perfect if Brent Spiner could replace her. They could say they transferred Data's consciousness from B4 and he's now the ship's AI, or simply that Geordi designed the new AI and he modeled it after Data.

Not a bad idea. If they managed to have Brent on Enterprise, they could find a way to have him in this show-that-is-still-hypothetical-and-has-the-power-to-break-my-heart-if-it-gets-lost-in-development-imbo. We are talking sci-fi, after all.

I understand that Spiner is good friends with Stewart, so that probably helps our chances of seeing (hearing?) him back in some capacity. And of course Frakes is still happy to direct Trek (and Orville), so getting him to direct an episode or two and guest starr at the same time should not be too difficult. That said, I think it's important not to go overboard with the old cast members. Establishing a new crew to carry on should be the priority (if it's supposed to be an ongoing series).
Here's an article I found that includes all the latest on the new CBS shows and the status of the movie universe. Plus I thought it was neat that it's named after this thread title.

I'm excited that we'll be getting all these new Star Trek shows but with how badly CBS handled Discovery, I'll reserve final judgement until I've seen them. Still, having 5 Trek shows reminds me of the golden age of Star Trek when we had TNG, DS9 and Voyager running simultaneously. Fingers crossed CBS doesn't screw it up.

Re: The Department of Temporal Investigation and the new timeline- this was sort of addressed in the Star Trek Online tie-in novel. There's a chapter in a psychiatric hospital where Dulmer (one of the agents from Trial and Tribble-ations) is being treated for a time-travel related disorder that creates false memories. He, of course, insists that they're memories of other timelines that are persisting even after they should have been 'fixed'. The memories in question are obviously references to the Kelvin Timeline and the Star Trek Destiny novelverse. And then it turns out that the nurse caring for him is actually Q, who is intrigued by these alternate realities.

So, TLDR version- the official-ish-but-not-really-canon explanation is (implied to be) that DTI did 'stop' Nero, but in a way that left the other timeline as an alternate reality, and also Q might be involved.

Well, I doubt every single one of them will actually happen. It's a lot of projects, and shit happens. But the one with Patrick Stewart (whatever it ends up being) looks like it's among the more likely to become reality.

I don't want to get my hopes up, I know nothing is confirmed, websites need clicks and all that. But.... yeah!!!!!!

Awesome news! Even though I love Stewart as an actor and his role as Picard - I just want the story to be continued, with or without him.
All I want is a screenwriter who actually understands and respects Star Trek theams and values. And has IQ above average.

They exist. CBS must just hire them.

Anyway, I wanted to add that Patrick Stewart is a superb choice and I hope that some other actors of TNG can be convinced to join too. Brent Spiner would be great.
