What are GUI-less Linux distros for?

Isn't it slower to go through all your folders to find stuff? And how would it display all the photos and images while looking through them without using some kind of software to display them?
Well mostly for low resources and servers I think, at least that's all I used them for.
Thank you very much for your active encouragement in getting people to try GNU/Linux. I think it is having a good effect around here.

I am a big fan of KDE, and I think it is very good in showing what a good Desktop Environment is capable of. And I never liked the "explorer as desktop" idea. Still, I have not been using KDE since I had to reinstall my system (hard drive failed). So I don't know how Plasma has evolved these many months. KDE makes a "power user" feel at home. Also try sister project digiKam for digital pohto management.

Out of curiosity, what kind of method is used in this kind of giveaway?

If you played and liked Bastion, you should *love* Transistor ;)
I’d say Transistor is to Bastion what Dragonfall is to Shadowrun Returns: take the same formula and improve it in every possible way!

I liked KDE a lot too, but I decided to switch to Cinnamon after having a look at KDE5 & not being very impressed. Cinnamon is also very nice though :)

At the close of the giveaway everyone will be assigned a number. I'll then go to random.org and generate a sequence up to the total number of entrants, which will determine the win order.

Whoever is first will get their first choice
Whoever is next on the list will get their first choice, assuming the first winner didn't get it (if they did then they'll get their second choice instead)
Whoever is next after that will get their first choice as long as it's still available, if not then their second choice assuming that's still available & if not that then their third choice

And so on.
And here's my entry selection from the awesome prize pool:

Pillars of Eternity: Hero Edition
Victor Vran
Satellite Reign
Shadowrun: Hong Kong
Hard West Collector's Edition
Transistor
Door Kickers
Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power

The right question would be "Who are GUI-less Linux distros for?" and judging by your avatar, you're gonna love the answer: "Real men!"

That or, depending on your definition of "GUI-less", for people who want a simple, easy-to-grasp initial state that they can more easily set up a custom GUI load-out on top of.

(eg. Back when I was using Gentoo, there was no installer and the basic install instructions left if up to you whether you wanted to continue on to the next guide to install a GUI.)

Well, I was hoping you would say why you were not very impressed with KDE5. :-)

Oh, I see. That is actually much simpler than what I expected. I feel a bit silly now. :-D
Hmm... I think I'll edit my list, then.

Gede: Well, I was hoping you would say why you were not very impressed with KDE5. :-)
Amongst other things it was very slow, *really* heavy RAM usage, horrible Win10-ish default theme (& no alternatives, plus the "get new themes" thing was completely broken), somehow lost the taskbar & window title bars when I next booted the system after the previous failed attempt at changing themes.

I tested in a VM using Kubuntu 15.10 for convenience so it's possible that those are partially responsible for some of the issues, but still :/ I did make a bootable USB drive to try the live environment on two systems, but on both it failed to even reach the desktop
All good games, Thank you for the initiative. I'm a veteran linux user from early 2000s, my 1st distro was fork of Mandrake, PCLinuxOs. After that, try Mandrake, SUSE, Debian, and Gentoo (for my the best distro for learning linux) and now works with a optimized custom Lubuntu.
If you want, I'm in for Door Kickers or Mark of the Ninja Special Edition, but not problem with no win.

Hmm so RAM usage is quickly becoming the Linux issue nowadays, first it was Unity then KDE I wonder what will follow that negative trend. Personally I like Linux mainly because its superior performance and that is a huge let down for me :( Btw guys which are the most beautiful "GUIs" for Linux for you?

One finger can make a difference.. Imagine what you can achive with ten!
I think you're completely fine as long as you are keeping both hands on the keyboard ; )
Do you really think digits is all we can see?

Midnight Commander works in terminal, more than enough to speed up operations on files.

leon30: Hmm so RAM usage is quickly becoming the Linux issue nowadays, first it was Unity then KDE I wonder what will follow that negative trend. Personally I like Linux mainly because its superior performance and that is a huge let down for me :(
Just a KDE issue really... KDE has long had a reputation for being bloated, but in my experience KDE4 was fine (especially once Akonadi was disabled).

I doubt Cinnamon or MATE will go the same way as the Mint developers seem careful to avoid bloat & instability.

My PC is right now running:
_a Web browser (obviously)
_a custom-made desktop environment (based on Openbox and ROX-filer)
_a Web server
_a mail server
_a BitTorrent server
_a couple other services

All of that is summing up for less than 512MiB of RAM in use (this PC has acces to 8GiB), so I’d say that RAM usage is far from being a problem on Linux…

There are resource-heavy environments, and very light ones (and of course a wide panel between these). As usual with an open-source OS, all is a matter of needs and choices ;)

mike_cesara: Midnight Commander works in terminal, more than enough to speed up operations on files.
Well that's a blast from the past.
My dad used to work with NC in DOS all the time.
Or some other clone, although I do think it had Commander in the name.
