Breja: Also, I liked Abrams' Star Trek movies, even Into Darkness...
Oh... I found the thread title intriguing, thinking I might get to see a good film in theater, but I'll just wait to see it on DVD or maybe even on TV. This year I have only considered the Warcraft movie as being worthy of seeing on the big screen. There's still hope with Suicide Squad and Rogue One.

Jesus. The negativity towards those movies amazes me. I kinda regret starting this thread. I thought it will be fun to talk about it, but instead all I got myself is probably the most negative response imaginable. I was in such a good mood, happy with seeing a new, fun Star Trek movie, but you guys are just killing me here. I wish I could go back in time and not start this, I'd spare myself the "joy" of sharing with you people :D

I'm out of this thread, at least untill someone wants to share something good about the new movie. I'm sorry if this seems childish or something, but I really just don't want to spoil whatever good mood I have left from having seen by reading any more of the "new movies suck" posts.
yeah how dare people have different opinions huh ?
i mean i ask you before you know it they seem to think they have a mind of their own
the nerve of them to dare to have dissenting opinions

Yeah, and my nerve for not wanting to waste my free time on reading internet hate :P

Look, I love talking about movies. Even arguing about movies. There is fun to be had in that. But what's happening here it's not a fun opportuinity to discuss dissenting opinions. It's a joyless pile of hate thrown on something I like, and made me happy. Why would I want to participate in that? So that the memory fun time I had at the cinema can be obscured by the fun of reading all the "nu trek sukz" posts?

If someone actually watches the movie and wants to discuss it, I'm game. If they liked it- awesome. If they didn't like it but want to actually talk about it and they manage to sound like there is some exchange of ideas to be made, rather than just hate, I'm game. If it's just more of this, thanks but no thanks. I know it probably makes me a terrible person, not wanting to waste my time on reading every single "that thing you like is shit" post, but I think I can live with that.

WOW. Apparently my post was the metaphorical straw that broke the camel's back, which was not my intent. Anyway, here's something that might make you happier, Angry Joe liked it.

I finally saw the last half of Darkness and fell in love with it so now I want to watch the first two movies and this one.
It's good, but not great.

The characters are not developed enough for for me to form an attachment to them. I imagine if I read more about Star Track and already have an attachment to the characters I would overlook it.

We have a villain who does evil for dumb reason, searching all his life for an ultimate evil weapon that look even weaker then the swarm ship weapon he already have. And all the aliens breath the same air as humans? Won't at least some of them have their personal respirator or environment suite or bio enhancement?

And why nobody thought of teleporting the villain into the arms of the security? Even teleporting half his body will solve the problem. The teleporting devices seems much more powerful than the so call ultimate evil weapon.

Still the movie have great special effect, great sci-fi elements, interesting exploration, good humor. It would be an enjoyable ride if the viewer don't think so much.

Well, all I can say is, welcome to the Internet... :/

Me, I liked the 2008 reboot (in spite of its issues) and I thought Force Awakens was a very admirable return to form for the cinematic Star Wars franchise (warts and all, though admittedly the bar was set very low).

I absolutely abhor Into Darkness. It had some good moments, but the movie, in my opinion, suffered from a miscasting of Khan -- or in fact even the fact that they felt like they had to remake Star Trek 2 for the second time, learning none of the lessons that came from Star Trek Nemesis...with an unnecessarily convoluted plot, no less. Given a choice, I'd personally gladly take Force Awakens over Into Darkness, for pretty much all of the reasons you give above (plot, acting, characters, pacing, writing, dialogue, etc.)

i guess the point I'm trying to make is that it's fine if you don't like movie x or if you think that movie y is the bee's knees. But as someone said earlier, if you're going to put a 'joyless pile of hate' on something that other people enjoy...well, with all due respect, the least you can expect is to have other people do the same to whatever sacred cow you personally uphold.

Stuff like this is why I find myself participating in forums less and less. There's so much negativity, hatred, elitism, etc. that it's just not fun anymore.

Anyway, I want to say thank you for sharing that you enjoyed the movie. I'm not really a Star Trek fan myself, but I have some family members who absolutely love it. It makes me happy to know that they'll probably enjoy this new movie, since I remember some people being concerned that it would be bad after one of the trailers came out.

Don't focus on the negativity and consider stuff like this:

I had a negative opinion, that apparently pushed Breja past the breaking point, but once I came across something positive about the movie, I thought of him and posted it here. It's stuff like this that still makes me love these forums. And I'm not a special unique snowflake, there are still enough people on GOG that do this. It's maybe not as prevalent as it was once was, but it's not gone entirely.

I took my sons to see the midnight showing as a part of a triple bill. We had a great time. The action was fun, the characters were interesting and it was quite well paced. I preferred it to Into Darkness, but even that film gets a lot of hate. A remake of Wrath of Khan? Only to the ignorant. I couldn't give a shit what any purists think about it. As a long time trekkie I just wanted to be entertained and I got my full moneys worth.
Just saw this tonight, fucking loved it. I loved that it referenced Enterprise-era stuff, I know it's not well regarded, and I'll admit to it having many flaws, but I largely enjoyed that show. And when the Kzinti got mentioned I was fucking giddy. Maybe we'll finally see the Kilkenny Cats get done in Discovery? I can only hope.
This was ok.
Some mindless scifi fun.
But if you stop and think of it: characters, villain, plot, events and solutions were all quite crap.
(as usual?)

Anyway, for me so far: ST2>ST3>ST1

Comments:
- where did the villain find his fleet? Didn't he say that the planet was abandoned and that he was trapped? Why would an alien race accept him as a supreme leader?
- why was the biological weapon so important, when his fleet could easily rip giant stations to pieces? Also, just destroying the air "generator" (or something) would have been way easier.
- I forgot but.. didn't the "old Spock" tell Kirk not to reveal his identity to the new one, in the previous movie?
- teleport is so OP! Distance and extreme movement don't seem a problem even for old devices. And portable versions exist now?
- a motorbike brought in space and in perfect conditions on a wreck. Sure.
- etc..

P.S: did you notice the giant green hand in the credits? *wink*

Spock found out about the identity of "old Spock" near the end of the first movie

In one of the logs, Krall mentioned the miners left behind a "drone workforce" and other equipment when they abandoned the planet.

DreadMoth: [..]
Thank you : )

Other things:
- was there any food on that deserted planet?
If not, how did the alien girl survive? (or everyone except Krall)
If yes, why did the villain had to use so much the life-drain "technology"? (more like magic)
If it was just against aging, 1-2 people seemed enough to make him young and only 100 years passed (if I understood it correctly).
He couldn't absorb the drones life, right? (otherwise, why bothering about prisoners)
If the effect only lasted a few hours\days, he needed like thousands of victims! (nobody noticed before?)
Btw, why not just fly home\away with his or their ships? (the army seemed quite efficent at hijacking)

...

O_o

P.S: also, Krall hated aliens and.. he allied with Manas -_-
P.P.S: old music vs alien army. Cool scene but sooo stupid.
