Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

I just wanted to mention that the atmosphere of this event reminded me very very much of the sda marathons. It's nearly identical. Super nice community, giddy and excited about great games, time/countdown based, no sleep, money is used to interact (for charity, even), lots and lots of running gags and rituals, and a boatload of warm fuzzy feelings for everyone. Group hugs included.

The next one starts 5th january 2014, or you can watch older ones on twitch. More info here: marathon.speeddemosarchive.com

cjc7: If I loose interest in a game I just tend to let it lay rather than playing it through.
avatar
Stilton: Its interesting you said that, because the forum has made me do the opposite. All of that enthusiasm has got me itching to get deep into whatever I play and get the most out of it. I get a similar feeling from YouTubing games I'm interested in when I find someone who loves what they're playing. It makes me want to do the same. The result of playing only racing games for years, I suppose.
I think , it's more just the stage I am find myself in now. I would , years back, never even considered not playing a game through, that is , as long it would run as expected on my machine.. But now , I want not so much the game play , but a plot I can get involved with , even a lighthearted plot , or serious plot seems to make no difference. Also I really take time now to appreciate a games art work.. Maybe just me getting too very old. Well, so be it , can't stop the aging , well at least not yet ha ha., they'll always be working on that though, no doubt.

I'm no spring chicken myself, so I know entirely what you're saying. Involvement matters a whole lot, both visually and via the story. I think its the latter that I picked up most from the forum, the way it can involve the player and turn a game into an experience instead of something to pass some time. This is where the enthusiasm comes from.

Thanks for the heads-up, schmutzi, I'll give it a look.

Buenro-games: The biggest memory I will have of this sale has to do with the amazing amount of beggars that are around the GOG forums. At some moment in time it felt like you were walking around the church plaza on a Sunday. Some of those accounts had just been created during the sale. Hmmm...
Oh crap! I slept through the sale. Can you hook a brother up? :)
Actually, I was lucky in that regard. I crashed last night before the end, but ended up with Psychonauts. :) I managed to be awake during all the games I was wanting. I missed one, but that was due to me totally spaced out. At one point there were tornado sirens going off across town and I could not be bothered to care. My connection remained, that is all that mattered at the time. :P

And now I must go. Its nearly 2am here and I've got to kick this late night habit. (I also think my hard drive is dying - a high-pitch squeal at this hour has the same unnerving effect as a howling baby).

Great talking to you all, and keep playing those hard-earned games!

G'night :-)

Goodnight Friend see ya latter..
Hello again, fellow addicts!

Hopefully with some sleep under your belts, you've had a chance to look over and even play a game or two you picked up.

Any major regrets?

Any pleasant surprises?

Anything left on your wishlist, not included in the sale?

Hi there , no regrets, none at all , I seem never to catch up with everything on my wish list, but put a good sized dent in it.
How about you, have you been playing your new games, or are you still in the recovery stage, as most of us left in here are?

BelowTheBelt: Bought about 20 games (including bundles, but not the expansion packs) for roughly $31. I've never played any of them, except Icewind Dale..and bought that one for an expansion I hadn't played.

Saw a great community come together and was especially surprised to see all the gifting and codes being bandied about. Speaks volumes for the people here.

I loved the sale. I found myself sleeping with my phone to see what games were chosen, even after I had nothing to buy. Since the sale started, I was glued to the frontpage and this mammoth thread, lol.

Was a great time!

Kaitu: Was looking for a total of 4-5 games and ended up with 25 (not including the codes I still have at my disposal).
LOL too funny! Same here. I was expecting to spend $5-10 and ended up spending over $30. Kept reading the comments and the reviews and thinking...$1.50...what's so bad about that? Game looks pretty cool. Why not?

AndyDivine79: Hey all. It's good to see all the warm fuzzies floating around here. I'm glad I got to experience this crazy event with such fine company. A special thanks to Tai for gifting me Torchlight and Nightrunner227 for pickiing up Psychonauts for me, a nice gift to wake up to. First day at my new job went smoothly. Getting ready to sit down to a nice meal, and later maybe I will play some sweet games. We should do this again. ;)

jackster79: I remember reading that a forum member had a new job today but could not remember which one (lack of sleep tends to do that).

Congrats on the first day, and hope everything continues to work out for you there!
Thank you kind Sir.

Not really, sort of wish I'd broken my self imposed limits and bought a couple of extra games. Deus Ex escaped but it's hardly the end of the world and I might be able to trade for it anyway.

I need to trim my wishlist as I tend to use it for bookmarks of games to look at more closely before buying, but I still have plenty I definitely do want. Games that weren't on the sale that spring to mind immediately are Costume Quest and Driftmoon.

Would Costume Quest be a good game for pre-teen girls ? If you know.

I have a hard time playing more than 1 game at a time, since I want to see everything in a game, go everywhere and in general make sure I've done everything at the 'hardest' setting. With limited time to play, my only concern is now my backlog is huge!

I was surprised that there were titles that I'd never heard of...like Deus Ex, that I must've been living under a rock to not even know that was around.

The one thing I was looking forward to getting but didn't was Thief 3. Barely missed it - as I recall, it was in a group of quick-flying titles in round 3 at a time I had to be offline. Oh well. Something to look forward to next sale.
