Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

snip3rfire: A question to pass time:

What has everyone been eating and drinking to keep them going over these past few days?
Coffee and cigarettes, and I have not eaten in the past 48 hours, don't have appetite because I fucked up my stomach before that.

Cardian: Basically this ^ When all the sought after games are gone, the sale would be left with only The Keaners and those would take even longer than they took now. Remember those brave souls that sacrificed themselves to The Keaning in order to move it along? Not gonna happen in that case. That's why GoG won't do it.
I personally think there shouldn´t be second rounds. You shouldn´t know what comes next or what games apply. That would surely keep everybody looking at the screen and would make selling the games faster.

Faenwulf: People, I am shocked and appaled.
How come that one of the absolute old tiem clasics is keaning on us?
HOW?!

zlep: This raises a pressing issue. Does the verbal form require a capital K for correct usage, or is that just for the fuddy-duddies who stick to historical precedent?
If it has been elevated to verb status, it shouldn't be getting a capital anymore, it's supposed to have transcended its mortal form.

Well keaning is a verb...so no capital. (to keane)
The Keaning as a historical incident is a subject. So a captial is required.

At least thats how I see it. ;)

Suloyapla: You know, it's kinda funny that a spaceflight sim game would STALL given how it takes place out of atmosphere.

SpiderFighter: Being a fan of the worst sort of humor, the lowly pun, +1 for you, good Sir and/or Madam. :)
+1 internets for me too, I love puns.

BlueLlama: So I take it that particular term has pretty much lost all meaning now? I'd say it's selling at a pretty decent rate for a third run.
Ah, a definition challenge. I agree with BlueLlama - if you can see it moving, it's not Keaning.

Alien8n: Actually it would be better, one of the downsides for GOG is the fact that there is a risk that they won't be able to end the sale within the weekend. This way would maximise sales over a shorter time, still keep the fun element of an "insomnia sale" and mean that at the point the much slower games are left at the end they can call it quits and finish with a much healthier bank balance. How much did they lose when they had to cut JK2 short the first time because people weren't able to buy the games they actually wanted? It's not just about total sales, but also speed of sales. At this rate they risk a serious hit to their reputation by trying to milk games that people simply aren't interested in.
True, if they stretch this till next week that can't be good.

SpiderFighter: Nice catch...congrats!! The only one on my list I've managed to pick up was Aquanox. I grabbed Startopia too, just because it looked interesting.

What sets Privateer apart from the rest of the franchise? I have 3 and 4...I assumed it was just another WC game, but with earlier graphics?
avatar
Shendue: Nope. It has different gameplay. More freedom, you act as a freelance mercenary so you can accept the missions you want from who you want. Different factions, there are diplomacy and business choices involved. More freedom of choice and more strategical.
Yes, afaik it´s more like Elite, Privateer 2: The Darkening was more like Wing Commander but it has more in common with Freelancer. Elite can be downloaded for free, both the first one and the second one.

SpiderFighter: ooh...I like sandboxy! Mayhaps I should re-investigate...thanks. :)
avatar
Faenwulf: Yeah, you still got time. ;)
But for only 1.50$...you can't really make a big mistake. One of the only problems the game has (because of its age) is its rather strange collision system. So better watch out were you're flying. ;)
Thanks! Based on your recommendation and LTHale's review on the game's profile page, I'm pulling the trigger.
high rated
You know, I started out watching this sale for one particular game, but since then I've purchased seven others, including a few I had not intended to get but am pretty sure I'll enjoy. I had a great time following this thread and meeting some fine folks. At this point if I miss my one game I'm still satisfied with the experience I've had here. I have passed through the fire of Keane and RCR and have emerged on the other side, unscathed.

I'm glad I'm coming to this realization now, because I'm going to be out for most of today. ;)

Well, you could see RCR move in its third round, too.
Still it took 8 hours (longer than the original Keaning). So, RCR was no Keaning? I'm pretty sure many people would find that to be wrong.

Why? people keep implying it has to be done and over in a couple of days but never give reasons....

Alien8n: Yeah, I saw some of them but they tended to be just "sell for X minutes". This way still maintains the "limited quantity" element, but does allow for a faster turn around allowing a single sitting to be possible. If all games hit 15 minutes there would be a 25 hour turn around, so with some games going in just a few minutes you could easily turn around all the games in under 24 hours, and repeat over the weekend. Downside would be all the slow selling games at the end on an infinite loop, but I guess with freebies added that would maintain interest until the sale finally ended.
avatar
mudd1: Another downside from GOG's point of view, BTW, *might* be that people could just pick the games they want from the list and basically calculate when they have to get in front of their screen to get them. That would mean less exposure of people to games that they've never heard of before. A small amount of randomness in the intervals could fix this though.

Of course if things went well, the much faster turnover would mean that people actually sit through a whole round.
If the list is still randomised that wouldn't be an issue, it would be fairly straightforward to write something that would create a random listing over several passes. As with this sale you wouldn't actually know what game was next.
Wow, it's still going. Is Omerta to blame? Or were there other games that just didn't sell.
They should end this sale giving everyone the chance to buy one of the "missed" games... that would be very nice...
