Deals so good, you won't want to fall asleep.
You remember back when you used to walk into a store, browse the shelves, pick out a game, and then buy it--all in the actual real world? We don't know about you, but most of us at GOG.com have had our limbs atrophy to small vestigial nubbins since all of our shopping happens online these days. Of course, one thing that sometimes happens in real world stores with real world goods--particularly when they have a good sale--is that they run out of stock. Usually that means that the deal was so good that they couldn't keep up with demand.

Well, in the digital realm, this is usually pretty rare. How do you run out of stock on digital games, short of entropy devouring the universe? Well, we have gotten 101 games that will be on sale on the front page of GOG.com, but the discounts are so high at the moment that we can't just sell an unlimited number of copies of these games: we are only able to sell a few at these discounts--up to 80% off--and once they're gone, they're gone.

So what games will be on sale in our Insomnia promo? Bestselling classics and new games alike. There will also occasionally be some free games in super limited numbers (like, 20 or 30 copies)--if you're fast enough on the trigger finger to pick 'em up, that is. The deal will run from now until we're out of "stock" of games for the sale, and games may show up more than once. So it's time to bathe in a tub of coffee*, dip some espresso**, snort an energy drink***, or do whatever else it takes to stay up so you don't miss out on the best deals on fantastic games on GOG.com since summer.
*This is probably not a good idea
**This is definitely not a good idea
***This is totally safe, though****

Quantomas: We will do in a couple of weeks, give it a brand new AI: www.eternal-essence.com -- sort of an unofficial 3.2 patch.

By all means get the DRM free bundle from GOG, the mod architecture of Heroes V is pretty complex, can't imagine that Steamworks helps here.

MasodikTiasma: Thank you, but this concerns AI. I was talking about the game crashing under Win7 64 after 1-2 hours of gameplay. Does your unofficial patch correct this as well?
We do track all reported bugs. AFAIK there is no specific instability on Win7 64. I play on this platform for a couple years. A clean reinstallation helps for some people. Again, a download file from GOG is much more practical here than Steam.

MGShogun: Me too. As soon I get Icewind Dale and Jade Empire, I'm going to hit the bed then start on the assignment.

HaydenRead: My assignment is on Time management and planning :-P
No problem then - just use this sale and forum as a dissertation on what not to do! :-)

tinyE: Can anyone give a comparison game to HOMM 5? Is it RPG, TBS, Strategy? It kind of looks like a card game offshoot ie AOW?
Are you familiar with ANY of the Heroes games? If yes, HoMM V it of course continues the tradition.

It is turn based on both hemispheres - the "strategical" world map and the tactical battlefield. The latter consists of square tiles and two armies on both sides. The last army standing wins. The cool new thing (I find) is that armies dont just simply take turns each "stack" has its own initiative - and this initiative is shown via an "initiative bar": little icons representing each unit lined up in a row. The row then works its way from the left to the right. If you cats spells that changes the initiative of certain units these units then immediatly change their place on the bar. Very intuitive.

On the world map you ride around with your hero(es) up to your max. movement allowance per turn. You visit resource piles and buildings, NPCs, stat augmenters and most importantly towns. It is there where you build your armies, learn spells, craft items andsoon. You get the drift.

Suloyapla: You know it would be nice to have a searchable history for sales like this along with previews of the next 1-3 games up for grabs (no prices for previews, danged free gaming stealing auto-clickers). Showing the past 5 games, current, next three would be ideal for me. :-)
If my memory is correct, Steam did a sale like that, once. Each flash sale had a countdown timer and a picture of what was coming next.
whew! I was away for a while and got back just in time! Heroes V is mine! <3

Thanks, unfortunately it needs to be from a Business Manager's perspective.

mantarrochen: Are you feeling the need to play your new GOG-HoMM despite the fact you played it on Steam before? I feel up to it.
avatar
Elinnea: I don't know about you, but I have this little problem with the HoMM series that involves not being able to stop once I start. I think I need to let some time pass after this sale ends first. I need to sleep sometime, eh?
I am TOTALLY capable of deciding when to stop playing HoMM! Pfff, easy.

;-)
is now freebie time

It is - now that you mention it I remember that is what they did during last year's Christmas sales.

And I loved that part - it allowed me to do my thing and not constantly stayed glued to the screen.

Not for me, it isn't.

Right, then. Just contact GOG's Business Manager by email and ask for a short chat about this sale.

Yeah steam has done a few time based flash sales, not quantity based that I know of.

It was an issue a couple years ago. People talked about it on the Steam forums, and I personnally experienced it. Anyway, thank you for your answers, I just bought the GOG version after all. I have a new PC now, the crashes could have been related to my old specs.
I'll check your mod, looks interesting. :-)
avatar
Bunnle: I'm curious what your reasoning is of why HoMM5 sucks? It was bad at launch because of a plethora of bugs, but those have all been ironed out by now.
avatar
istudedinre: HOMM V definitely doesn't suck. I'll agree that my favorite is HOMM III, but HOMM V is a worthy contribution to the series. It's been all roses for me.
That's exactly how I've felt about the series. There just seems a very strong bandwagon going on when it comes to the 3rd installment. HoMM3 spans the crown and the rest is dirt in comparison. It's really strange. I had a great time with II, V and even VI.
