Pheace: Rumors it may be Epic exclusive so coming out end of
next year is probably a more conservative estimate
And nothing of value was lost.
Borderlands started out great and practically invented the hybridization of FPS with ARPG-style random tiered loot. The original Borderlands was my favorite and remains my favorite even to this day. Nothing else in the franchise even comes close.
Turns out Gearbox got giddy, greedy, and arrogant on their success. I don't know why Borderlands 2 gets "Overwhelmingly Positve" reviews on Steam, compared with "Very Positive" on the original. The 2nd Borderlands added boatloads of money-grubbing DLC schemes, much worse combat balance designed on getting you to spend on Golden Keys to open the premium chest (lootbox), and nerfed drop rates for really good items to coerce you into paying for lootboxes. Borderlands 2 also added a lot of bad language and inappropriate/lewd references that were practically absent in the original. The ammo system was also nerfed, with ammo costs in Borderlands 2 scaling with level and only 1 class in the base game being able to regenerate ammo (vs. the original where every character could regenerate at least 1 type of ammo, and there was a line of legendary weapons with regenerating ammo). Restricting ammo regeneration fundamentally turns large battles into fights of attrition where you have to count every bullet because it will cost a lot to replenish and missing too much will cost you the fight.
I've never played (or even bothered with) the Pre-Sequel, especially after reading the reviews. Common complaints are that it's too short. Also I heard reports that they added some characters with specific controversial "background traits" to appease the social justice crowd (won't elaborate here for the same reason as post #2 from DoomSooth).
Oh, and it turns out Gearbox's CEO got caught in a discrimination scandal involving anti-Christian slurs:

Also: given that Gearbox has largely spent the last 5-6 years going down the crapper with the rest of the big-budget devs in a race to the bottom, I can safely predict that the third Borderlands will be a disaster right out of the gate. Lootboxes, money-grubbing DLC schemes, social justice pandering, nonsensical storyline, the crudest lewdest excuse for "humor" ever, ridiculous/poorly balanced game mechanics - no interest whatsoever.
