I think a better question would be, "Should rape stories have horror in them?"
What about soft drinks?

Johnmourby: Soooo.... rape. What a nice, uncontroversial subject. I don't see how this could end badly......
Why not. Every horror story should have one, two or more rapes.
Zombies raping, zombie raped, reaply raped by the alien, Clive Barker's unraping.

Well then the question becomes what is a rape story? Is 50 Shades a rape story and should it have horror in it? Or does it already!? The answer to any one of those questions will very enormously depending on who you're talking to.

Crazy thing is, I was reading this thread this morning when I flipped over to Yahoo really quick for a forecast, and that pic was on there with the headline: "33 Greatest Sign Failures of All Time".

Even better question: "Should stories rape horror?"

Seeing as 50 shades was mentioned I feel the better question is:
"Should fanfic rape literature?"
Sometimes I wonder if the whole point of these topics is for some "hipster" to make himself feel better by showing exactly how "anti-rape" he is. I don't believe anyone in this thread condones rape (I sure hope not), but I don't see the point in debating which of us is more against rape than the other and what extremes we might support (i.e. banning rape from horror movies and games) just to show who's the most anti-rape.

'Hurt me!' she begged, leaning over the dining table expectantly. 'OK,' I replied, 'Your turkey's too dry and your sprouts are overcooked.'

Frantically I tore off her dress, bra and knickers. My heart was racing but I just managed to close the wardrobe door before she got home.

If you are accusing me of having some sort of agenda you'd best come out and say it. I've said nothing to the effect of wanting things banned. I think it's rather sad that saying "This is bad and I don't like it" is automatically interpreted by some people as censorship. If I wanted stuff banned 1 I'd just come out and say it 2 I'd say it the government before dropping it on the web.
And I'm certainly not doing this to prove myself the most anti-rape. If I was I'd advocate it be removed from all games, not just horror. I'm doing this because for me Rape and horror mixing is a sensitive area and I want to know if people agree or disagree with me (Even if I don't like what I hear).
50 Shades of Gray isn't a 'rape movie' it's a 'why did I pay 8 dollars to sit through this piece of shit movie'. :P
Look at Berserk, then look what rape could do in a horror story

Then you will add "psicological" for the genre, because really, unless you want to put emphasis on the character's experience then it's fine, or to set up the world as cruel is also fine or an anti-war message, I see no other use for it :P

To avoid the implementation of an action, and say it can't be used effectively to prove a point or statement is being dishonest, is understandable your questioning, but don't be THAT guy and don't pull an absolute, it just makes you look creatively deprived if you were to thought out that kind of scene and how you think that couldn't work :P

Besides how one handles the mix depends on the author...not just a "personality" or group when there can be one dude actually pulling it off to be sentimental and sad and be ready for a journey of misery, look at DareDevil: The Man Without Fear or Born Again or Pun Pun on how that really depends on the writer

While not horror, Pulp Fiction wouldn't have been the movie that it was without the rape scene. What is Pulp Fiction anyway, comedy? At least I recall laughing out loud a lot, also during the rape scene. So was my wife, go figure.

How about Deliverance? Was it horror? Would it have been as iconic as it was, without the rape scene?

EDIT: Off-topic, but I just found it interesting how all the four lead actors of Deliverance are so close in age. All of them were born in 1936-1938, within two years. Not sure why I find this surprising, but I just do (esp. as it wasn't a teenager movie or something, with teenage actors).
