dtgreene: Why are people distributing .rar files when there are plenty of free alternatives available?
And .rar somehow isn't free?

I was wondering that myself. XD
I haven't seen an 'opener' in years that didn't work with all types, rar and zip and anything else.

Well, technically it claims not to be free, and there are a couple of functions that don't work if unregistered, but unless all those memes are right and it's the test for Heaven... :))

It's non-free in the sense of freedom, not price. (For anyone who knows Spanish, I mean "libre", not "gratis".)

In particular, the license contains a clause forbidding one from using the unrar source code to make a utility to create .rar files, which makes it non-free.

See:

dtgreene: Why are people distributing .rar files when there are plenty of free alternatives available? It annoys me everytime I see a download that is a .rar file rather than .zip, .7z, .tar.gz, or .tar.xz.
Well, ZIP has its limitations (total path length and non-ASCII characters for instance). But 7z fixes that, compresses better and is FLOSS. RAR's obsolete. I also am puzzled why anyone uses it anymore.
Guess I'll snag Mark Leung now.
I've... never even heard of them.

Starkrun: Only place I knew that sold Arcania: Gothic 4 Fully 100% DRM-free and running great!

Im truly going to miss them :( good people, great prices you just cant beat them!

NoNewTaleToTell: For what it's worth, from what I've read Arcania (on Steam) received a patch a couple of weeks ago that removed the DRM (Securom I think it was?).
I can confirm that Arcania has had SecuROM removed and by doing so appears to have brought back some old bugs. See http://steamcommunity.com/app/39690/discussions/0/487876568237366497/ I can also confirm that they haven't used Steam's CEG and the game can be played without the Steam client.
Don't have much on Shiny Loot, just three games:
- Jack Keane
- Realms of the Haunting
- So Blonde (where did I get that from??)

Still, it's sad to see Shiny Loot go...

Dessimu: - So Blonde (where did I get that from??)
It was in a Groupees ShinyLoot bundle. It has ties to the Captain Morgane game you can find on Steam and maybe elsewhere.

In fact, the version of "Captain Morgane" that I have actually has references to the title "So Brunette" in the files. So very definitely connected. :)

Captain Morgane is a NPC in So Blonde, and both games are from Wizarbox, the developer behind grey matter (minus Jane Jensen, of course).

I also have So Blonde from shinyloot, along with a few other drm-free adventures. Unfortunately a missed Haunted on the last sale.

Captain Morgane isn't drm-free anywhere that I know of, though (maybe gog or fireflowergames could fix that...)

l8r!
Any chance they are going to do a blowout sale before the end? Didn't see anything in the email, but it would be nice to catch the last few games on there on my wishlist.

It is on Desura, for whatever that's worth at this point. I believe I got it there via IndieRoyale, back when those were worth picking up.
