Hello!

I'm looking for accessible games for a young kid. If it had any combination of puzzles, problem solving, and math, that would be very rad.

Thanks for your inputs!

The incredible machine comes to mind right away. Then there's Beneath a steel sky for puzzle solving. It's a free game too. Timelapse, Myst, and Riven are all great puzzle/ exploration games. Treasure adventure game is pretty fun, and free as well. Roller coaster Tycoon Deluxe is a great game for budgeting and planning in advance. I'm sure some of the other folks here would probably have better suggestions.

Edit: Forgot to mention Loom. It's kind of a musical puzzle game. It's a really old game though. DOS games are a treasure trove when it comes to edutainment. I guess it all depends on if you want a modern game or not.

Take a look at the Pilot Brothers series, they are point & click adventure/puzzle games aimed at kids.
If I had a kid and the kid had access to a tablet or a phone, I would make sure Plants vs Zombies (the original, not the charmed-down sequel) was installed. PvZ is perfect for all ages. It's a tower defence game with a soul. As for maths, you need to keep track of your resources (sunflower-generated sun points), and there's a host of puzzle-like mini-games included.

It's not on GOG, unfortunately. Since PopCap (the developer) was bought by EA, they have become DRM-drenched and I doubt we will see it here any time soon. There's a free ad-riddled android download (and ios, I would think), but the ads are mainly at the start of the session and are easy to skip.

I would recommend

The Night of the Rabbit
Anna's Quest
Journey of a Roach
Gomo

All four games are here on GOG and heavily discounted at the moment. If you hurry you can get all four together for literally a few dollars.
Thank you for all the great suggestions!
Hi classick2002

I would recommend botanicula, link below.

Kids of the age you mention will love it. Amazing sounds and graphics plus problem solving required. No maths though, just sheer adventure enjoyement.

Trine series is nice to play
Botanicula.

There's one slightly scary bit where a cartoon monster jumps out and yells at the characters, but otherwise it's utterly perfect. I played it with my own boys when they were only slightly older than that.

I second Gomo and Botanicula, those are perfect. I would add:

Little Inferno - funny, unique, charming, with some rather simple puzzles, but I think they should be engaging and funny enough to a 6 year old.

Any and all parts of the braveland series - it's basically a very simple version of Heroes of Might and Magic or King's Bounty. The graphics should quite fitting for a kid, and as the difficulty is rather low for a turn based strategy game it should be about right.

LOOM - ok, here I'm kind of guessing, not having any experience with kids outside of having been one a while back :P. It might prove too complex for a little kid. Then again it's actually a fair bit easier than most classic adventure games, and I think it's the perfect kind of fantasy story for a child, one with a unique world and atmosphere and ideas, and even if won't "get" it all, it will still challenge and stimulate his imagination.

Little Inferno might seem charming and funny for adults, but I'd imagine that kids that young would find it rather disturbing (It's about watching toys and other things burn and be consumed by flames ...) Of course, it always depends on the child in question.

If the kid's not that sensitive and not that easily weirded out, Chuchel could be fun for them, too. (A giant hand and other creatures keep stealing Chuchel's cherry.)

In my experience young kids like A Short Hike. It's not really about maths or puzzles or something like that, more about exploration. Some light problem solving, I guess.

I'll second Pajama Sam Vol. 1 and 2. (Vol. 1 is the better deal) You may want to wait for a sale though, as when they go on sale they do go for -60% generally.

6 yr olds need parents, not games.
