Am a tad illiterate about that stuff.

Is it somehow related to battletech, and the mechwarrior or mech commander games, or does it mean nothing about that.

It is related in that the early Mechwarrior games used some mecha that were based/licensed/goat? on some mecha from the Macross series. Sometime later, Harmony Gold, the American company that holds the Robotech license, claimed that only they can use any even remotely similar looking mecha outside of Japan exclusively. The Mechwarrior 'mechs became 'Unseen' and their use is verboten. Which means as long as Harmony Gold is being so litigious, we will never be able to see a Mechwarrior 1 or 2 re-release.

martigasin: just hit the news Sony bought robotech license to produce franchise yes!! i´m so happy! finally . poor tobey maguire i hope he gets cast in something (he used to have the rights with warner)

Gersen: "Robotech"... usually anything with Robotech in the name is bad news...
This. A million times, this. Not to mention that now we'll have hordes of people using the name "Veritech Fighter", etc.

Gersen: I just hope that it will mean that it will now be easier to have newer Macross stuff released outside of japan. (Or it could be the start of a new legal battle.)
Considering the tenacity with which Harmony Gold has held on to its stranglehold on Macross in North America, I wouldn't hold my breath. It makes me weep though. I'm ready to throw my money at any company (except Harmoney Gold) who can do a proper North American DVD box set release of Macross Zero and Macross Frontier.

Tarm: Sony. Great a lot of small robotech games for mobiles...
Actually, I could see the Super Robot Wars series of games (from Bandai, right?) doing well on mobile devices. But I can only imagine the nightmare of IP licensing that that would entail.

SCPM: I prefer the Macross series' story to the weird mishmash that was Robotech. Plus, I'm upset at Harmony Gold handling of the mecha's images outside of Japan which means we can't have any of the Macross series in the U.S., nor can we get a re-release of Mechwarrior 1 or 2.
to be fair, it's incredibly unlikely that we would have ever gotten 7 or Frontier anyway, because of the costs of licensing all the music.

but it still sucks
I'm a bit sad about the news of Sony buying the license. I don't want them to screw over my great childhood memories of the series with a crappy michael bay type movie with people who can't act. It's bad enough how transformers was handled =( Sure the first one was okay however each sequel was more and more dissapointing....

enigmaxg2: Since Pacific Rim and Transformers, I'm begging for more mecha live-action movies. (If you know some, feel free to recommend them)

The Verge says that Michael Gordon (300, G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra) is writing the script for the movie, let's hope Sony comes up with something good.
Alright I'm watching the new Godzilla right now and I take it back that the rest of the film doesn't matter. The bad there is sometimes outweighting the giant monster factor. Ugh what a bad film.
