What is Undertale anyway?

Undertale, a most peculiar RPG adventure, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

What is Undertale? It's a good, tough question. It's a particularly weird little game — a textbook case of so unusual and special, that saying too much might end up a disservice.

The adorable 8-bit RPG is, like most things in life and Undertale, an unassuming layer of lies. Lies, beneath which lies one of the most interesting indie games in recent memory — Undertale the RPG where talking your way out of every fight is an option, but then so is total genocide. It's a game that throws countless twists at you — abstract encounters with absurd enemies, the most unexpected consequences to your actions, and vastly varying experiences that are 100% your fault. Who you are, and how your Undertale plays out will change everything — even your next inevitable playthrough.

Your most peculiar adventure begins with Undertale, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last for one week, until March 8, 1:59 PM GMT.

In the press:
“The puzzles aren't particularly impressive.” 10/10 – Destructoid
“I have a couple of issues with the user interface.” 10/10 – PCInvasion
“If there’s a criticism to be had, it’s that sometimes Toby Fox doesn’t know when to let a joke go.” 10/10 – The Jimquisition
Finally it is here were it belongs. Unfortunately a bit too late since I got this game on steam a week ago and since it does work without steam installed there is no real disadvantage for me so I probably won't buy it again. GOG you need to ne faster if you want to prevent this. At least you should say THAT it is coming SOON before people are giving up and buying elsewhere. But anyway great catch for a great game!

I can almost sympathize with those who complain about the community, but I see way more people making hateful comments about the game & community than I do fans that are actually showing any kind of toxic behavior. I think the complaints are way overblown, unless the mere act of liking the game more than other games is considered toxic behavior...

Whoever wrote this review on the Undertale GOG game page:

«In a normal world, Undertale would be a mediocre bullet-hell title. Gameplay-wise it's really sub-par. On the other hand, the initial rpg parodying this game provides did help this title to be noticed, unfortunately not in a right way. Characters, plot and "genocide or pacifist" - which is exactly the same gameplay-wise (the point was to show that there is no fucking difference in the mechanics in nowadays rpgs despite what marketing and drones can say) - are intentionally AWFUL. Yes, I said it. They're all awful on purpose and the game was received in absolutely wrong way by the "Internet people" (spoiled millenials unleashed). And you know how the lowest Internet's denominator is like. Early Internet was pretty tamed, yeah you had your Sonic maniacs and furries, but they were contained due to the lack of the totalitarian Internet Social Media cancer. But then the Social Media happened and it jumped to the band wagon along with aging, unleashed millenials that can't define themselves without any cringeworthy franchise, fanbase or trademark, due to being absolutely personality-less thanks to the reformed education. In my wildest dreams I wouldn't imagine that furries would be considered perfectly normal (although a little but silly) bunch on the Internet. But they're. Compared to "bronies" and tumblrinas they're. But ponies are getting old and the millenials crowds needed to find the new Thing to turn it into fandom shit. Surprisingly enough it was the Undertale's fate, because apparently fans failed the basic perception check on what this game's message is. The cringeworthy abuse of the Undertale logo, misunderstood themes and messages and Undertale porn invading EVERYTHING on the Internet is enough to hate this game itself, although it really doesn't deserve it. If you still think "oh boy, but what would be so bad out there to hate this game?", Google the "ask humantale" and remember that bleach will not be enough. I know you will hate me.»

gets all the rep I can possibly give them.

My thoughts on this game, pretty much. Overhyped and overrated to hell and back.

But, hey!, lots of people should be happy, and means more money for GOG, so I'm happy too. Just, please, stop talking about it like it is "The Game to End All Games".
I've been waiting to see this here. Almost bought it on Steam a few times but, screw those guys, even the big sales haven't been enough to convince me to put up with them.

I just bought a crapload of games from the last two sales though so I have definitely overextended my game budget for a while.

This, however, goes on the wishlist.

I'll buy you, Undertale, just not right now.

Yeah, same here. I agree with everything you have said, MarkoH01.

Well, count yourself lucky. I love the game but the community that formed around it was the scourge of the internet for weeks after it got popular. While the waves of porn and sh!ty fan fiction where predictable, the insufferable levels of smugness people have for playing it is mind numbing.

I can relate to this, but I still don't see why you should hate the game itself because of the people loving it. I just played it, ignored all the BS around it, I'm old enough to make up my mind about things without asking what the internet thinks about how right/wrong I am.

From the Let's Plays I've watched (I totally recommend the Undertale Let's Play videos of PushingUpRoses) this seems like a game I'd like to experience - I'd agree that it probably isn't the best game ever (that title should go to Defender's Quest or something imo-biased opinion ofc :P -although I'm still not certain whether maybe I'd place some other games on the podium alongside it, but DQ certainly is a damn good game), but it might be one of the quirkiest from what I've seen, so wishlisted till later on.

On another note, it has a pretty good soundtrack. Why isn't the soundtrack included, or at least separately purchaseable here on Gog?

ShadowWulfe: So... why not release it day one?
Possible reasons:

1) GOG didn't want it originally

2) Undertale dev wrote the game with Steam features in mind and it took this long to strip them out

3) Undertale dev wrote the game with Steam features in mind and it took this longer to add Galaxy features

4) Undertale dev got tired of Barry asking, "Are you bringing it to GOG?!?"
If I end up buying it eventually it will be from here.

I keep meaning to at least watch the first few episodes of her playthrough, but I also don't want to spoilered too much.

IronArcturus: So why is this game so popular? It looks like some kind of puzzle game with an RPG built-in.
It's the story.

In terms of actual gameplay, it has the bare minimum of RPG mechanics, but not much.

This is a game where you explore the world and click on every object to read what it says. This is a game where you go up to every NPC and click on them to talk to them and read what they say. You'll want to do these things because the writing and dialogue are where this game shines. It's all about the story.

And if you're just not interested in a story game, that's fine.
This game is weird along with the community it created (but then again the same thing can be said for other games out there). I really did like it overall, but not enough to really say "OMg BeST gaem of AL time YOO!" or something else cringe worthy. Nice to finally see it here in the end.

*Buys it*

It uses allot of meta humor and it basically calls out every cliche modern RPG use over and over again.
I'm happy for all the people that wanted this game here, I truly am.

But may I be so bold as to request one simple thing, for all of us that aren't interested in the game?

Please, PLEASE keep the Undertale porn to a minimum.

Thank you very much.
