T-Rex cutlets is what's for dinner.

Turok, the remastered fast-paced jurrassic FPS, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

Remember when dinosaurs were all the rage and aliens were still scary? Ah, yes, the 90s. What a magical time to be growing up. Imagine a jungle-like land populated with unfriendly aliens. Now throw in some aggressive flora for added inhospitality. Surely, dinosaurs are the next logical addition. No wait, make that dinosaurs with guns. All that's missing now is an angry Native American warrior of time-travelling heritage to clean up the mess and thwart a great evil in the process. There, pure 90s.

Thankfully, Turok is not in the habit of entering such exotic-but-hostile lands unprepared. Strapped across his back are all kinds of devastating weapons, from the not-so-humble bow and knife to handheld instruments of mass destruction like miniguns and rocket-launchers. Plus all the havoc they wreak now looks extra spiffy in this remastered version, thanks to widescreen and high resolutions support, improved level design and fancy lighting effects.

Bring an army of oversized reptiles closer to extinction as the legendary Turok, now DRM-free on GOG.com. The 20% launch discount will last until December 24, 17:59 PM GMT.

Seems way overpriced.
I enjoyed playing Turok on the N64, didn't know there was a PC release of it, so I'll have to get it and give it a try. Glad to see it here!

The PC (Windows) had 4 Turok games ouf of 6:

1.) Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (1997)
2.) Turok 2: Seed of Evil (1999)
3.) Turok Evolution (2003)
4.) Turok (2008)

Graphic wise, the PC version were always superior to the console (Nintendo 64, Gamecube etc.) versions.

dirtyharry50: I'm a little surprised by the price myself but I assume it is a reflection of how much work was involved in reworking the engine to run on modern hardware. It is really nice that this new release supports widescreen modes too. I can appreciate that depending on what they had to work with it could well have been a daunting task to update this and comparisons to other games that have also been updated really wouldn't apply as every one is a unique project unto itself.

orbika: The old game already worked great with help of GLIDE wrappers (Nglide, DGVoodoo) ...

With Glide wrappers you could even try to play on 4k and beyond. The only problems are the small resolution textures and so it can happen, that the whole thing looks blured.

And as you can see, this "HD remake" didn't include HD textures. So?

I understand what you're saying above but the fact is they chose a different route at a different cost than doing that and I think that is probably why it launched at a higher price than their other releases thus far. I don't really have a comment or opinion on which way would have been the best choice since I've not bought and played it yet but even if I did I guess the point is moot now anyway. It's done the way its done.

I would agree with you too that updated textures would have been nice while they were at it. In any event I knew about this game and never got to play it back in the day so I'm very happy about the release. That said, I'll play other games from the backlog for now and pick it up later on a sale with a price more to my liking but then I always do that anyway for nearly everything. :D

timppu: I don't bitch about prices. I simply don't buy something I feel is overpriced for my budget and interest for the game. There will be sales later, if I don't agree with the current price.

In Steam it is even more pricier for me (GOG 14.59€, Steam 15.99€), so... Are Steam users bitching about the price everywhere?
Yes, Steam users are bitching big time about the price. There are numerous threads of complaint and the back and forth you might expect that goes with that. I see it like you do I think as much ado about nothing. I'll just wait until the price drops to what works for me and pick it up then. Problem solved. I mean who has not one game to keep them occupied while waiting for sales, etc. nowadays? It cannot be very many people and certainly not the number of people crying about the launch price of this one.

Yeah, at this price, one could expect HD textures (at least optional ones).
HD textures are available for Doom 1+2, Heretic, Hexen and many other games for free and they look awesome.
Thanks for the hint towards the HD textures for Thief, I'll have to get those. Are there similar ones for Thief 2?

Hmmm, I did not expect this release so soon, very interesting :) I loved Turok back then (although I prefer the 2). I am hesitant to buy it now as I have way too many games to play and finish. And I understand the complaints about the price, but still think that they are a little exaggerated, it is a remake after all. I do not think the price is so bad, at least with the launch discount.

igrok: Well, a few other Cryo games are here, and Lost Eden is not a part of some game universe.
avatar
Grargar: Since Cryo has shut down, it's unknown who has the rights to the game. Maybe it's Interplay (who might not be in their best financial position right now), maybe someone else.
Hopefully GOG at least asked Anumen at some point, seeing as they have other Cryo games (at least published here).

tinyE: I knew a guy with that name! XD No shit, back in St Louis 35 years ago. I would imagine he's long since died. Nice guy but kind of stuck in the 50's. Korean War vet too.
Based on your response I'm not sure whether or not you realize the significance of the surname Frankenberger in the context of which I mentioned it...

madcartoonist: can't decide on this one. A lot of my Turok experience centered around using the controller on the N64. I was fairly new to 3d games in general and getting used to using the stick and the C buttons to move was an experience. I remember there was a part in the beginning where you had to walk up a log and I had such a hard time with that. Once I got used to the controls I think they were actually pretty good. Moving with the C-buttons and looking with the stick actually was similar to what we do today with two analog sticks.
The N64 was funny in that you aimed with your left hand opposite to modern gamepads.

Turok 2 could use the N64 ram pack to boost the graphics so i would disagree on that point.

I doubt that Anuman have the rights, as they would then sell it to other stores, as they do with games from their catalog that are still not on GOG. Either Interplay have the rights to the game, as they own everything from Titus (who in turn purchased Virgin Interactive, the game's original publisher) or the rights slipped through the cracks and god knows who owns them now.
What's so overpriced about it? Game is good, beside video games are like art - they're timeless.
Talking about pricing:

Underrail was released today on GoG. It's a completely new game, everything there was made fresh and it even supports two more operating systems, yet it's cheaper than Turok's remake even without a discount. Turok had all the assets and gameplay finished already and was just repackaged, in addition to that, Turok doesn't feature much of a storyline that needed tons of writing and if/then programming with different decisions,etc...

There you got your comparison right on time.

Edit: And it includes the soundtrack.

Turok, this was destined to be released here on GOG. It fits perfectly ;)

Probably not coincidentally, I bought one of these games at release.
