It’s an adventure strategy game about conquering fear and taking risks. The risk to be caught by a military regime, looking for people who publicly stand against their point of view. The risk of losing everything, including our loved ones.

Through the Darkest of Times from HandyGames is now available DRM-free on GOG.COM.
Nice, thanks for releasing it here, day-1.
Now bring Attentat 1942 as well.

Looks nice...can one play good AND bad characters(i.e. "stab people in the back" to get ahead or stay safe) or is it just a "goody two shoes" game?
To be honest I would of found it more appealing if it was set in a setting that wasn't done to death such as Communist China, North Korean, Pol Pots Cambodia, South American Dictatorship, Soviet Russia, but oh well.

I am guessing not many devs want to step on the toes of our allies and trading partners(and potential customer), so they stick to older things when making such games(like WW2 and WW1 and earlier)....also many are likely more familiar with such battles in some areas of the world than the other events/eras you mentioned.

I see your point with Communist China and safe plots. Soviets and Pol Pots Cambodia aren't around anymore though- Interesting to think that since it's 2020 now 1933 was only 13 years from being 100 years ago.

They still will likely sell to those countries(russia/etc) and don't want to ruffle feathers....sure, some use soviets as bad guys, but they usually don't delve too far into the atrocities committed in said lands during said time periods(i.e. historically accurate reminders of their grim past would likely cause some customers from said lands to complain).

Dear Gog staff, please consider not showing the rating by non-owners at the bottom before there also is a rating by verified owners, especially for games with strong ideological themes.

Unfortunately yes. Everyone seems to be very careful not to anger that touchy super-power (and it's money). Which is sad. I really would be interested in a game set in the cultural revolution.

ie a nazi collaborateur, not something a normal person would wanna play, so im guessing no :)

How much woke elements are in this game? I can handle a bit, but not preaching, and prefer games with more nuance. I see "resistance" and I am afraid I am going to get "orange man bad" in a game set in past history, which I prefer to skip if that is the case. Is this a Wolfenstein New Colossus or a more balanced game?

Why? Several European countries were praizing nazi collaborators in later years.

And besides we already have games where we are siding with religious zealots (Christian or Muslim) killing people in the name of the God. And in Total War we are literally playing as Atilla, devastating entire Roman Empire. Heck, you can literally play as Nazi Germany in Hearts of Iron.

I think you do have a point but it doesn't apply very well to this particular case. There is a fundamental difference between playing on a strategic level dealing with faceless troops and something like this, a personable, immersive experience.

Seeing that title picture from the game card, it probably isn't very controversial to say that "normal people" don't immediately itch to play one of the three gestapos with the hound.

This is a game about joining the resistance against an oppressive, inhumane regime. To be complaining about having to play "Goody Two-shoes" is a bit absurd and like complaining you can't play a Combine soldier in HL2. Only much more disrespectful because there were actual resistance fighters to whom, by extension, you're now also applying that term.

I suppose there are games that let you freely play psychopaths or compromised egoistic roles, and they have their place, but this isn't one of them.

Death of one person is a tragedy. Deaths of millions of people - that's statisics. (c)

richlind33: to be rabidly fixated on one to the exception of almost all others, is also abnormal -- extremely abnormal.
Who's fixated? These individual developers for using a setting you personally find overdone? Have all their past games also played in Nazi Germany? Would that be a fixation?

Or do you mean our culture abstractly and resent that there is a market for this type of game, that some people apparently still take an interest in this setting?
