Your empire rises, better than ever...

The Settlers: Rise of an Empire - Gold Edition, a quality return to the core formula, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The game is available at 50% off, or 60% off if you complete the series.

The Settlers is a series fond of change and evolution, and though it's hard for a fan to call any entry "bad", some design choices have met with equal amounts of praise and criticism. After The Settlers: Heritage of Kings launched to a controversial reception, enamoring some and disappointing others - The Settlers: Rise of An Empire returns to a more classic formula, catering to the oldest fans of the series, while providing plenty of eye candy and much-needed updates for newcomers. The gameplay basics, like building and collecting resources, have been streamlined to minimise menial clicking and annoyances - but not so much that they can be considered "dumbed down". At the time of it's premiere, Rise of an Empire was considered (arguably, of course) the best to date.

To celebrate the launch, The Settlers: Rise of an Empire along with the whole series is available at 60% off when you complete your collection. You can also pick up the games at 50% off individually.

Rediscover the love in The Settlers: Rise of an Empire - Gold Edition, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The launch discount will last until September 7, 2:59 PM GMT.

Impaler26: Controls are quite clunky
Quite? Clunkiest game ever! But I like it :)

Impaler26: I have it on a magazine CD
Actually it looks like lots of folks got their Asghan game via newspaper stands *myself included* :P
This is awesome. Now I'm just hoping that they'll soon be able to add the two expansions to Heritage of Kings and hopefully some day we'll get the first Settlers game as well. That game was really awesome and I am a bit of a completionist when it comes to my gog collection...
and the spanish language disapears... when a place with drm has it. :D

Lodium: Kind of yes and kind of no.
In settlers you have to build up more resoures to be able to build up units
build iron mines , build coal mines, build smelter etc, So you kind of micromanage more.
The later installment is kinda diffrent from the earlier installments.
The saying goes that the First Settlers games 1-3 were the best among settlers fans if my memory doesnt fail me.

IronArcturus: Does the game have a windowed mode?
Hmm, not really sure, been long since i played the games
i guess i coud gift you one of the earlier games since i have spare code for SETTLERS® 2: 10TH ANNIVERSARY,
then you coud try at least that one for yourself.

Licurg: Since Ubi is releasing more games here, can we get this ?

I always heard good things about it, but never played it. It's supposed to be "revolutionary" for it's time .
That would be awesome :D

Not to sound ungrateful, but this recent wave of Ubi only reminds me of how many more Ubisoft titles the GOG catalogue is still lacking. Keep 'em coming!

That game looked pretty cool! Hmm, would you want to trade it for Battle Realms?
Dear GOG, I will complete my settlers collection, but only if you offer all of them in german, too. I still don't understand why this could be a problem. Ubisoft has all the necessary rights to this versions, too. They (or Blue Byte) were always the publisher and Ubi bought Blue Byte 14 years ago.

Much of the Ubi catalog is not DRM free, so it's unlikely to make it to GOG.

If you have the expansion disks to Heritage of Kings. I still have them and they work fine with the GOG version, but obviously it still requires the CD to be able to play the eexpansions.
Afraid so. You may wish to try Settlers 2, 3 or any of the Cultures series.

I would say not at all like AoE, although to describe the mechanics, they might sound similar. If this game is somewhat like the earlier titles in the series, it is about process. For example, harvest coal and ore to make iron to make weapons to make soldiers. The focus is on the flow of supply and making it efficient. What you do with the soldiers tends to be secondary. It is a bit more like a sim than an RTS game. A good settlers game is enjoyable to watch, when you have made a functional settlement. Traditionally it had a cute factor as well. Watching the townspeople harvest, bake, and so forth was meant to have its own appeal. The android game Townsmen must have been inspired by the Settlers games. It plays much like the early Settlers pc games did.
Nice to see newer Ubisoft games coming here. Keep it up! :)
