Orcs must NOT die.

Tales of Maj'Eyal: Embers of Rage, the new chapter to the turn-based roguelike RPG of vast character customization, is available now for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com with in-game achievements and a 10% launch discount. To celebrate the occasion, all previous Tales of Maj'Eyal installments are also on discount.

All Orc Prides have been wiped out or captured by the allied forces the greenskins call The Scourge from the West. All? No! One of them managed to survive, isolated on an island they share with a race of technologically advanced giants. Now the Kruk Pride must rise and attempt to claim that technology for themselves, before they can unleash their righteous wrath upon those that aim to suppress them.

The new, fully-fledged campaign in this savage land will give you the opportunity to play as a Sawbutcher or a Gunslinger, and even unlock additional secret classes that will allow the Orcs to reestablish themselves in the world of Eyal. Countless new items, talents, and zones are waiting to be discovered, and the new tinker crafting system will give your character some advanced gear to experiment with. You might think Orcs are just dumb masses of green muscle but when they get their hands on that sweet tech, you will be glad to be playing as one of them.

Help the orcfolk reclaim their rightful place and live their Tales of Maj'Eyal: Embers of Rage, DRM-free on GOG.com. Take this opportunity to revisit the Tales of Maj'Eyal going for 75% off and the first DLC Ashes of Urh'Rok, now discounted by 66%.
All discounts will last until March 1st, 4:59 AM GMT.

lepke1979: It also lets you make your gal a red head and give her a bikini.
Ah, but can you take of her bikini and let her be one with nature?

Only if she's anti-magic... :P

Random_Coffee: I'm considering grabbing TOME, and maybe the first DLC. I don't have much experience with roguelikes (only one I can think of that I played is Risk of Rain). I have played a lot of RPGs though. Is this game any good for a roguelike-noob? And of course, is it easy to learn? :)
Well, there`s the "Exploration Mode", which gives you infinite lifes. Then there are two other modes, one which gives you three lifes and one which is permadeath, meaning: you die and your character is gone with the wind.
Those modes are not the difficulty, which you can adjust seperately. There are 4 if I remember correctly: Easy, Normal, Hard and Insane.
On Easy, you won`t get any archievements or unlockables. So you have to play normal, if you want to unlock new classes and archievements.
I recommend to play in Exploration mode with Normal difficulty. Limited lifes or even permadeath are not possible if you ever want to beat this game, because you will die often without any chance. Even in the very early game it can happen that you`ll get ambushed and have to fight overpowered mobs, which kill you nearly instantly. Especially when you use melee characters a game can be over within the first ten minutes.
So never ever choose limited lifes.

I disagree. I always play permadeath and I can normally bring a character to at least level 10-20 before I die. That certainly wasn't the case when I played the game for the first time, but with each death you learn something new and very soon you'll know which areas you should better avoid in the beginning and which risks you should better not take.

I also like to try out different races and classes and so permadeath gives me the opportunity to experience a whole new game everytime I die and start again.

This is what I love about roguelikes.
Normally I'd play an RPG and go for either a relatively safe build (Fighter or something similar) or a class that I like the look of (Druid or Necromancer or whatever interests me at the time) and have to stick the whole game as that class even if it's boring or not actually great.
With a roguelike I try everything and find the set of characters and races I like to play. And each time I play a character I can try something a little different (suited to whatever items I might find in that play through)

Losing is fun ;)
Embrace death :)

Falkenherz: I don't know. All the lore and back story felt to me like the usual who is who of high fantasy tropes. All the stuff you have heard before, only randomly thrown together in a new constellation. The only interesting thing to me were the "short story" parts of the collectable lore, but only so much. If I want really gripping and engaging stories, I usually look to books anyway instead of games.

For a setting to really feel "true" to me, there are so many individual things that have to fall into place and intertwine in a dense, sensical, and consistent way, that it's really hard to please me in that regard. Off the top of my head, on of the best games regarding setting in my opinion is Morrowind. Tales of Maj'Eyal has an OK setting (to me).
I kinda get what you mean. Some games's settings feel "lived in", and that's awesome.

ToME isn't that, not remotely. But it's METAL. It has the Sandworm Lair, that nightmarish dwarven dungeon, and the badass secret fortress, and those are just starting dungeons where I tend to die. I've seen higher-level content on youtube, and it's even more metal. ToME has the CHRONO LEGIONNAIRE as a playable class.

Single-author fiction, generally speaking, can't handle high magic. IRL, there isn't a rubric for throwing fireballs (not that I care about swording either), so I can't force myself to care about who throws fireballs better. Strategy games are the go-to-genre, but they lack immediacy / the roleplaying aspect, some don't even have player avatars. Roleplaying games tend to become a number inflation treadmill. Blobbers can't do tactics. ToME, though? ToME delivers. Here's a high-level fight.

re: rest of thread:
I play Adventure, but restart when I die once. Adventure is there just in case I get far enough that I won't want to restart.
Thanks for the tips! I played the game for a while this morning, and I think it's pretty good. I will definitely grab the first expansion as well. I played on normal difficulty and adventure mode, to learn the game. I'll probably start experimenting with nightmare difficulty soon.
This game indeed is hard. :P I've tried the restricted version from the homepage on easy mode. After spawning I mostly was surrounded by enemies without a chance to recreate and died within a few turns. You can't even run off enemies, they are as fast as you ...

lepke1979: TOME is free, but the donated version (which is the version you get from GOG and elsewhere) gives you you some extras.

Stone Warden class and the vault. It also lets you make your guy or gal a red head and give them a bikini/mankini.

The link below gives specifics:
http://te4.org/donate
So the GOG version does include the same special features as when you donate directly to the author? And you can use these features, especially the Stone Warden class, in the GOG version without an online connection, right?

Nightmare difficulty? On adventurer -limited lives- mode? You are either very brave or a little bit insane! :-)
Or maybe both?

Hehe, I haven't met very big resistance yet on normal difficulty. I've cleared out a troll lair, and explored some ruins. Of course, it will probably get very tough later on. I'll have to play some more on normal to fully learn the game before I go nightmare-difficulty :D

Good, then it's bought. And if it's only to get the adventure mode with infinite lives. :)

Duel wield chainsaws is a blast. Hoping there are shotguns so I can fail miserably at an Ash run (assuming I can hold a gun and chainsaw, haven't tried yet).

Also, if there isn't a boss with a gun and chainsaw that yells out, "This is my BOOMSTICK!" I will be severely disappointed.
