Choosing the right dogfight.

Tachyon: The Fringe, an action-packed space sim, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount!

Pirates, ruthless entrepreneurs, and crime barons play nice while inside the Sol system. But once outside the jurisdiction of the Star Patrol police, your guns and thrusters are the only law that can protect you. Follow your instincts and keep your finger on the trigger while you navigate the perilous Fringe - you've got choices to make, ships and stations to blow up, and quests to see through. Bruce Campbell's voice might inspire you to play tough but save the attitude for when you've got the firepower to back it up. And when your antics attract the attention of powerful people, proceed with caution: any alliances will shape your story and upset the power balance in this lawless corner of the galaxy. You'll be fine, as long as you remember to always shoot first.

Carve out your own personal space in the dog-eat-dog world of Tachyon: The Fringe, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 50% discount will last until January 19, 5:00 PM UTC.

Iain: Hmmmmm, this version is missing the intro (Steam version is also), shows the 3DFX splash screen then onto the title screen. Granted the intro is only a minute or so long but it sets the scene, you can watch it on Youtube.

tburger: I can confirm that the intro doesn't work from within the game but if you drag a file tachyon.bik and drop it on Binkplay.exe - the movie is displayed. Hopefully it's just a hickup on release and GOG will do an update.
The version on Steam is the same, wonder if it has something to do with it saying Novalogic at the beginning, ah well, it sets the scene and at least it is in the install folder

Bambusek: Well, nice, I think there were many people asking for this game when THQ Nordic bought Novalogic IPs.
avatar
IronArcturus: Novalogic had a lot of cool games! I wonder if we'll see the Armored Fist series...
Oh thank you for letting us know about these! We need some tank sims on gog. Voted.
Bought. More NovaLogic, please, starting with Comanche (and Werewolf) and Armored Fist.
Bruce Campbell is always awesome. I remember hearing good stuff about the game too, I think. :)

Ixamyakxim: ... While you're here - does Freelancer also include flightstick support? (I feel like this one is going to end up here soon / someday too).....
Don't. I do not want an Oblivion situation where every time someone mentions it (with or without 0's and 1's) the game gets postponed with at least an extra month.

Just don't.

Bought. Think i had this a long time ago so nice to have it again.
Nice, another lost classic.
Nice release. Can't wait for Delta Force series.
I own this game in one of those large box that it was in when it got released. Sadly, I never got the opportunity to play it.

Ixamyakxim: Awesome thank you sounds just like what I was looking for.

While you're here - does Freelancer also include flightstick support? (I feel like this one is going to end up here soon / someday too).

Is it basically an open world, but with mission driven quests to pick up?

Also, Starlancer is more akin to a typical early era space sim right? Linear, mission based. When I say linear, I mean you get a briefing, undertake mission, end mission. Go to "base," get another mission, attempt mission, back to base. Almost like individual "levels" strung along by a story.
Freelancer you control with a mouse. It works surprisingly well, though. Freelancer is open world with a story, that unlocks more and more of space for you to explore. After the story's completion you can roam all of space and do missions and explore.

And yes, Starlancer is pretty much like Wing Commander. You're part of a squadron, stationed on a carrier, doing missions and influencing the course of the war. Well scripted missions with interesting characters, though.

morolf: Can you play that game with mouse and keyboard like Freespace or does one need a joystick?
avatar
Silverhawk170485: Yes, you can play it with mouse and keyboard.
Thanks for the answer! I might consider buying it then.

Ixamyakxim: Primarily this - can I get a confirm? This is the first question I wanted to ask when I saw the front page release. I know a lot of games from this era actually pushed the mouse and keyboard flight sim (Freelancer being another) - it was one of the reasons I sort of fell out of the genre. I'd LOVE to know if there's in game flightstick support (I'm not keen on the idea of running third party software in the background to get a freakin' FLIGHTstick to work in a FLIGHT sim).
I've just played through some of the the ring training missions with the game in WINE using my MadCatz/Cyborg V.1 and I can say with confidence that it natively supports joysticks. In fact, IMHO the game plays much better with a joystick than with KB+M.

You can set the resolution to 1920x1080 using the nGlide config within the installation folder and it looks really sharp
How do you get it to use nGlide? When I use the launcher I don't see any option to set it to use 3Dfx rendering.

Edit: Instructions on enabling 3Dfx rendering are available here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2605480
