Tachyon: The Fringe, an action-packed space sim, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount!

Pirates, ruthless entrepreneurs, and crime barons play nice while inside the Sol system. But once outside the jurisdiction of the Star Patrol police, your guns and thrusters are the only law that can protect you. Follow your instincts and keep your finger on the trigger while you navigate the perilous Fringe - you've got choices to make, ships and stations to blow up, and quests to see through. Bruce Campbell's voice might inspire you to play tough but save the attitude for when you've got the firepower to back it up. And when your antics attract the attention of powerful people, proceed with caution: any alliances will shape your story and upset the power balance in this lawless corner of the galaxy. You'll be fine, as long as you remember to always shoot first.

Carve out your own personal space in the dog-eat-dog world of Tachyon: The Fringe, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 50% discount will last until January 19, 5:00 PM UTC.

morolf: Can you play that game with mouse and keyboard like Freespace or does one need a joystick?
Yes, you can play it with mouse and keyboard.
"Next time you pass by and drop in, keep passing by until you get to the river... and then drop in."

Instabought.
Great game that is voiced by Bruce Campbell which is enough to buy it on its own merit!!

Its kind of like Freelancer but has a bit more depth to the flight controls, you can get loads of different ships ranging from fighters to larger frigate type vessels, each has various weapon and engine slots which is always great.

It is very story driven with cutscenes and it does use quite a few keys for different systems but it isn't overboard, after about 30 minutes play you will have the hang of things and be in your element.

THQ Nordic bought the Novalogic games licenses, that will be why this has landed here, no doubt we will see Delta Force and their other games eventually arrive here now.

I do own the big box version of this and have a copy on Steam, but why not, just bought it here also

Impaler26: I just saw that there are several games from Novalogic on Steam, i guess most of these will also be released on GOG eventually:

Hmm, no Comanche: Maximum Overkill there. I hope it shows up here eventually! :)
Oh hell yeah. I've been eyeing this one on Steam for like half a year. I had never heard about it until I checked out the entire Novalogic catalogue there. Seems really cool, I think I'm actually gonna instabuy it at this price. Can't have too many space combat sims. Or too much Bruce Campbell.

Oh yeah, I've been trying to get hold of that one for a while, particularly the best version (released even after Comanche CD) seems to be hard to find. Almost bought it from Amazon but the guy selling it wouldn't deliver to Poland. Hope GOG is gonna get it sooner than later.

Ixamyakxim: Awesome news - I was an avid "space simmer" back in the day but never played this one. Before I instabuy, can I ask anyone who has played this a few questions?

avatar
foxworks: Doesn't appear so. Joystick support, yes.
avatar
Ixamyakxim: Primarily this - can I get a confirm? This is the first question I wanted to ask when I saw the front page release. I know a lot of games from this era actually pushed the mouse and keyboard flight sim (Freelancer being another) - it was one of the reasons I sort of fell out of the genre. I'd LOVE to know if there's in game flightstick support (I'm not keen on the idea of running third party software in the background to get a freakin' FLIGHTstick to work in a FLIGHT sim).
Tachyon is three years older than Freelancer and yes, it does have flight stick support.

avatar
Ixamyakxim: The game is highly single player focused yes? And from what I understand, it's a open world, but with big setpiece missions right? Not linear like, say Freespace. But not as "sandbox-ey" as the X series. So you can wander the world but hit "mission areas" (quest markers) like in an RPG and do said quest. Is this more or less the idea here?
It's not open world like Privateer or Freelancer. You're in the star system, where the story wants you to be and can take on side missions there, but going to other systems mostly amounts to nothing, because there's nothing for you to do there.

avatar
Ixamyakxim: Finally, ship options - ship / system / weapon upgrades?
Yes, there are different ships, that you can buy and that handle differently. Also plenty of equipment and weapons to outfit your ship with.

Hmmmmm, this version is missing the intro (Steam version is also), shows the 3DFX splash screen then onto the title screen. Granted the intro is only a minute or so long but it sets the scene, you can watch it on Youtube.

You can set the resolution to 1920x1080 using the nGlide config within the installation folder and it looks really sharp

Really? WSGF didn't make it sound like the fixes were all that great.

I just set it to 1920x1080 with VSync enabled using nGlide within the install folder and it looks great, really sharp looking visuals. There isn't an AA option with it given its age so upping the resolution removes a lot of the jaggy lines and sharpens the image

stryx:
Awesome thank you sounds just like what I was looking for.

While you're here - does Freelancer also include flightstick support? (I feel like this one is going to end up here soon / someday too).

Is it basically an open world, but with mission driven quests to pick up?

Also, Starlancer is more akin to a typical early era space sim right? Linear, mission based. When I say linear, I mean you get a briefing, undertake mission, end mission. Go to "base," get another mission, attempt mission, back to base. Almost like individual "levels" strung along by a story.
Yay, NovaLogic! I spent my childhood in NovaLogic's virtual cockpits :D I really, really hope to see Comanche 3/Gold here...

p.s. while speaking about helicopters I also hope for Apache: Air Assault (it's 2010 game made by Wings of Prey devs Gaijin Entertainment, but it's nowhere to buy) ... GOG pleeeeease! :D

I can confirm that the intro doesn't work from within the game but if you drag a file tachyon.bik and drop it on Binkplay.exe - the movie is displayed. Hopefully it's just a hickup on release and GOG will do an update.
I suppose this leans more into the sim side/ I mean, someone would play it as a space sim and not so much as shooter, right?
