An iconic classic, fully remastered by the team at Nightdive Studios, through its proprietary KEX engine, allowing the game to run on modern gaming devices at up to 4K resolution at 120FPS.

STAR WARS™: Dark Forces Remaster is now out on GOG!

Expect all fourteen original levels, featuring Star Wars™ worlds and capital ships, engaging first-person ground combat featuring ten weapons and twenty types of enemies, Personal Digital Assistant (providing you with in game information such including map, inventory, and mission briefing), modern gamepad support, controller support, advanced 3D rendering, up to 4K 120FPS visuals, and much more!

The original 1995 STAR WARS™: Dark Forces raised the bar for FPS games, offering players a significant degree of movement and interactivity, a large selection of items and power-ups, and engaging environments.
In that iconic title you assume the role of Kyle Katarn, a defector of the Galactic Empire turned mercenary for hire. Katarn joins the Rebel Alliance’s covert operations division tasked with infiltrating the Galactic Empire, where he discovers the secret Dark Trooper Project. The development of this powerful new series of Imperial battle droids and power-armored stormtroopers stands to strengthen the Empire’s grip on the galaxy unless Katarn and the Rebel Alliance intervene.

With STAR WARS™: Dark Forces Remaster, every new and returning player will be able to enjoy all of that with upgraded gameplay, high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and rendering, and support for gamepads.

That’s not all, though! For those who already own the classic STAR WARS™: Dark Forces – you get a -10% launch discount on the Remaster, until April 29th, 2 PM UTC!

Make sure to check it out – with Nightdive Studios behind the wheel, we couldn’t be more excited!

tfishell: Removed a couple years back at this point, I believe. New versions were created and combined together into the Disney Classic Games Collection...
Thanks for the infornations, tfishell and BreOl72! Wow, didn't know that.

I'm torn between being happy for those that have this much money to spend on remasters of old games, and upset that that behavior is encouraging higher prices.

Ixoliptis: Too expensive IMHO.

Turok 3 remaster's pricing was sorta justified, as porting an N64 exclusive to modern systems with 4K/120-FPS enhancements (and such low spec requirements) is a massive PITA.

On the other hand SW:DF remaster doesn't have the excuse of being an exclusive to a headache-inducing console.

Lastly I'm no SW fan and never played the original (just a casual boomer-shooter fan) but even if I were/did, the pricing would still feel like a ripoff.

Zackman1999: I am a Star Wars fan, I did play the original (which is an antique boomer shooter by car law) and I feel the pricing is reasonable.
I mean I never claimed anywhere that every Star Wars fan shares my opinion, but thanks for your (irrelevant) input.

I do not agree. Both Turok 3 or DF have been ported from N64 or DOS to a different platform/OS. If the price is justified in one case it should be justified in the other as well. Both have been ported to modern systems with 4K/120-FPS enhancements officially.
I think the remaster looks good...

... but...

... was enough done to command that price point?

No.

Sarang: I wanted to add in no uncertain terms for clarification Nightdive is NOT the video game equivalent of Criterion for movies here taking said review into account.
That being said I would said there is NO video game company that is even COMPARABLE to Criterion that exists.
That's a very good point.
For as much as I love proper remasters/restorations of classic movies (like Criterion's), I quite dislike classic game remasters/remakes.
And you're right, they're very much not the same thing. Open source efforts like accurate and faithful emulators, or engine ports like the Source one mentioned in this thread for example, are much closer to Criterion's contribution to movies.

Except that this game (SW:DF) is not an N64 port, it is based on the DOS version which is far easier to port than an N64 exclusive (Turok 3).

EDIT: FWIW I feel like people get aggresively defensive over this, if you enjoy this game it's money well spent at the end of the day. However, that doesn't change the fact that there are other remasters with much more work done that cost the same or even less than this game, hence my negative opinion about its pricing.

The same engine is used in both games for the remasters. The work and effort involved is the same.

I do not see it as a valid reason to consider one game should be cheaper than the other. The improvements are equally wellcome in both ports. If you had played the original DOS DF you would know what you are talking about.

I like to think my input is at least as relevant as yours. And that I'm a bit less rude. ;)

Since the question came up on the game's sub-forum, there is at least some limited support for custom maps in the Remaster version, but nothing out of the box. I was able to load my favorite custom map, the TIE Defender Base, by doing the following:
Rename the override.gob file in the install directory to a unique name like overrideOLD.gob, then add the custom level gob file and rename it to override.gob. There's no guarantee that this will work with other custom levels and mods, but at least it loaded the map including the custom TIE Defender model, see the attached screen.

In the end everyone has to decide for himself.
Despite all the changes I still consider myself a Star Wars fan (currently reading some novels as well) and I adored Darkf Forces and everything around it, including the illustrated novels. But I just don't see this remaster being worth 30 bucks for me, even if the scaled textures by hand and improved the sprites, fixed the texturing of 3D objects. For half the price I would have grabbed it instantly. But as it is ... I'll wait. There is no rush for me to get this game.

Well, I don't want to sound too repetitive by expressing the same opinion as many others have already expressed here, but that price tag is a wee bit too steep (as it, sadly, seems to be the norm nowadays). And as for the discount, whilst appreciated, doesn't really help that much I'm afraid.

Regardless, I'm still quite glad to see this here and without having to wait forever... thou I'm afraid I will have to end up waiting forever in order to get this at a reasonable price.

T-T

Anyway, Nightdive Studios please do keep up with the great work (except for the price tags, hehe), and please... all the Heretic and Hexen games next. Pretty please.
