iscagog: I think you'll find they were spice mines. Typical of fake news.
Nothing like getting corrected by a Gamorean pig-dog. The only fake news, is that Gamoreans have more intelligence than Kowakian Monkey Lizards. Except for Voort, but then he was genetically modified.

Why don't you slither back off to the Hutt Spawn you work for, and pray you don't meet your immediate demise as a snack for some rancor.

While im not that offended by this game. They could have called it something else. Maybe like "Infectious Disease Manager". Or they could used a different time period Like "Black Death Simulator". There plenty of things they could done to avoid using the word Covid-19.
avatar
Phasmid: I know this is rhetorical illustration, but...
There's already a pre-existing (free to play on computer) game series called Pandemic, and EA still holds the Pandemic trademark for use in gaming from its purchase of Pandemic Studios. They literally could not call this game Pandemic.
There's also a pre-existing Epidemic game, and an Epidemic! game too (trivia: I have the original SSI Epidemic! from 1982 on my bookshelf).
Obviously Plague Inc exists as well. And gets a massive boost in sales every time there's an infectious disease in the news.
So there aren't many unused generic terms for infectious diseases available for use in game names except, well, Infectious Disease Response Simulator maybe.

timppu: Good point. So what you are basically saying is that the developers had no choice but to call this a COVID game because all the other alternatives were taken?
Any attempts to prove the makers shocse the Covid title as anything other then a really cheap marketing gimmick is living in another reality.
avatar
dudalb: I will defend the makers right to bring thsi game out as a matter of free speech,
Yes, I would agree with this, and I think it has a right to be published as does any other game. GOG are unlikely to remove it anyway, especially given that (from the Jujubee website) ...

"Jujubee is the game development studio behind such titles as "FLASHOUT 3D", "Suspect in Sight", "Realpolitiks", “KURSK” and "Deep Diving Simulator". The studio was founded by former members of CD Projekt RED, Traveller’s Tales and Infinite Dreams"

It's not that it exists that bothers me, its whether the information they are disseminating about the current pandemic is accurate, up to date and verifiable. I might be forced into buying the game next week to check this out further.

Since the advertising promises that the game will provide me with information on how I should behave in the event of an epidemic, what actions I should take take, and how to protect myself and my loved ones in the most effective way, I very much hope that it is accurate.

From what I saw in a video about the game, it IS kinda educational - but it is more about the interaction of political factors that impact disease management by nations. I don't think it would be very useful on a individual level.

The Outbreak: Intro video

Let's Try: COVID - The Outbreak
First thing that changed literal definition of pandemic specifically for the case to prevent further spread despite low sickness/mortality, previously not even flu, smallpox, influenza or asian fever could do it. ;D

Impressive how they managed to make whole game with nice interface and gameplay about such limited topic.

There was also Dawson College Massacre, about Montreal. The author took it down very quickly.

Yeah, thanks, Sabin. I guess it is the "kinda" educational bit that is the worry.

Anyway, I'm no SJW (I couldn't really care less about the 'moraility' of this release), I know that there are far worse "games" out there, and people are perfectly entitled to make/play them. As for making sure this game is factually correct and accurate, that isn't my problem either. I won't be buying it.

As someone said earlier in the thread, the best thing is to ignore this game completely, and vote with my wallet in the future as far as GOG is concerned.

For me, I will unsubscribe from all GOG emails, not visit the store again (I've only just seen that you can turn it off), keep away from the forums and just play my existing games collection.

Spectre: There were middle eastern wargames when the the Iraq and Afghanistan wars had started.
We're they titled Iraq of Afghan war or similar, or were they based around such conflicts? I ask as there were middle eastern wars/battles before those ones, and those games might've been based on those much earlier battles.

Gersen: Like I said earlier, Cancer is still very current right now and is killing and impacting way more lives than Covid-19, and will continue to do so long after we have a vaccine for the later, yet we have tons of media using it as their premise. Same thing happened some years ago when AIDS was at its worse.
Yes, but afaik not much of it(if any)(I mean games and movies and such) was made when those diseases first hit or were discovered.....but made when people had become more or less "used"** to both illnesses.

(**=i.e. once people stopped focusing so much on them as a collective whole).

(Or it was "serious" documentary type stuff)

What do you mean MANY defenders? Most of the posts here seem to be AGAINST it.

timppu: LOL, besides this game, Steam has four other COVID-games out or coming out soon.

This seems interesting, a first person shooter where you use a gun which shoots rolls of toilet paper at the virus.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1316570/Operation_Covid19/
*Looks at link*

Well, at least this one pokes more fun at the TP hoarding(i.e. it seems to be more satirical) and doesn't come off with some A.T.E. donation thing to pull at people's heart (and wallet) strings.

That said......wtf.....64 Gigabytes ram recommended?!?

Why?!?

Me either.....I mean besides all I said already, the additional fact they likely allowed it here in part was because they know the dev team is a load of barnacles(to put it mildly)

The GOGBear will get put into a rocket and scapegoated directly into the sun for this indignity.

I've left because the politics and the impossible standards for avoiding political discussions irked me. I decided to stick to game specific forums (actually, only 1, and because i felt i had an issue to address [eventually decided to contact the devs directly]). However, i must break this vow of silence for this game... We need to worry about how our politics look on the forums until we can make a sale on it i see... Now it's not just an impossible standard to avoid politics, but a double standard! SARS-CoV-2 and how to handle it is very much a political issue, so now GOG wants to support things it agrees with while banning discussion on politics? I'm absolutely sure they're doing a good job banning all discussion on it as well, outside of this game.

But, hey, i'm a free speech absolutist, so i think it has a right to exist. I think gog should freely allow as many games as possible. However, GOG should know damn well that this is going to put it's curation under much, much more scrutiny at this point. All the games it rejects and rejected in the past in favor of this obvious tone-deaf cash-in? Either come up with some standard we can verify for your curation, or abandon it entirely, because i think most people would say this is not something to make GOG alot of money over something like pro-trump or pro-biden propaganda. Insted of pissing off "one camp" you manage to piss off everyone with this. Sure, it should be allowed on here, but beware the outrage over the next game you reject.
too soon too far Kapp
