amok: it was already DRM free on Epic store...

Screamshield: You still have to download the Epic client. You can't download directly from your browser. So i wouldn't call it DRM free. Especially with the problems Epic has with user accounts and your personal information, installing the Epic client is a big NO NO for me. GOG is a European company that abides by European consumer protection laws and data protection laws(this is an extra bonus onto of everything else that GOG is and GOG does), so it is always best to buy your games from here IMO.
Add to this that even though a game there might be playable without the client it does not guarantee you that this will remain the the case after some future updates. Especially in regards of Control it actually wasn't DRM-free from the start, they patched it out later ... but as I said - no guarantee. I bought it there because I did not expect it to arrive here so soon at all but usually I will always prefer to buy guaranteed DRM-free here on GOG.

amok: you may not like the client and epic, and that's fair enoguh, but it does not change the fact that the game itself is DRM free. when it has been edelivered to you, there is no checks or controls - i.e. no rights management at all, so removing the R and M from DRM
But then you still don't receive updates without the client. And this sucks also. DRM-free on GOG is just better, because you don't need a client at all.

still does not change the fact that it is DRM free on epic. and just use epic to get the update. on gOg you need gOg to get the update

GOG is not a client. I can download stuff with my browser, that's very convenient. Everything else is unnecessary. Forcing to install and use a client is a very unfriendly behaviour.

don't worry, i get it - you don't like clients. and that's perfectly fine and noone is telling you to get one.

does not change the fact that Control is DMR free on Epic, though....

A good example of that would be Final Fantasy X/X-2 on Steam : it was originally released DRM-free... then they added a DRM with an update, then rolled it back... but not because of the added DRM but because said DRM wasn't working in offline mode... not sure were it is now, if it's still DRM-free or not.

Doesn't also change the fact that as long as EGS doesn't officially label which of their games are DRM-free, Epic has no hope of getting me to spend a single cent in their store.

I dunno...

It's a bit of a trade-off. Epic doesn't explicitly label their games as DRMed or DRM-free. The downside to that is that you may have to do a minute or two of your own research via google if a game has DRM on Epic or not. The upside is "Out of sight, out of mind", which is how you will find a lot of AAA tier releases on Epic that aren't even on gog (at least not yet). Gog has always made DRM-free a big deal and it makes the suits queazy. With Epic, they either don't seem to care or they take it for granted that their client features some Steamworks-type DRM (which it doesn't).

and that also do not change the fact that the game is DRM free on Epic.

this is not to say gOg is better, worse, clients are bad, clients are good or whotnot, Just the simple fact the the game is DRM free there as well. This was a reply to post nr4, simply pointing out that the game is already sold DRM free in another store. whether that store label the game as DRM free, does not change this.

Buy it from gOg, dislike clients, hate Epic for it's Chinese connection, whether they label or not label the games in a way you like and that the board are lizard people from outer space. non of these changes the fact that the game is DRM free there as well .
Big lol@the top rated review!

Quote:

Control released on Epic Games with a one year exclusivity deal. I refuse to support Epic or their business partners so I waited. Official tweet from @ControlRemedy on 2019-03-18 said "There are no plans at this stage to release the game via @GOGcom", so I reluctantly bought it on Steam on 2020-08-27. What happens a mere two weeks after the Steam launch? For sale on GOG! I understand situations change, but I would have never purchased on Steam if there were even rumours of an upcoming GOG release.
This comes from a verified owner. Meaning the dude bought it on both gog and Steam. Congratulations! They lied to you and you rewarded them by giving them money twice - on release at (almost) full price! That'll teach them! :D
I was so looking forward to this game's release since I saw it for sale on the Epic Game Store and consoles. I saw game play of it from benchmarkers and it looks very good.

Mawthra: So much love to GOG for making this happen! Pre-purchased without a moment's hesitation
GOG didn't make it happen, 505 Games have many games on GOG, but GOG will take the love.

No you don't need the Store Client on GOG, you can get an offline installer using your browser, you can't get an offline installer with Epic.
Also Epic allows DRM in the games, it's not a DRM free store.

That installer is far more important to me, than whether a game is DRM free. I'd gladly accept DRM, if I could get offline installers from other stores, and ditch their clients.

The Epic version of Control doesn't need the client or anything else to play the game. You can just zip up the files and play whenever and however you like.
A DRM'ed version without the client but with downloadable installer would still need the authentication server.

Funny preference you have.

and again - whether you like to use the client or not, or prefer gOg or not, or whether there are other DRM'd games on Epic or not - have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Control is DRM free on Epic as well.

what is this?
thank you GOG and 505 games, you guys rock
