Hellfire expansion is now available as a free add-on for everyone who purchases the Blizzard classic Diablo on GOG.COM.

Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

The Hellfire expansion comes with high-resolution support and compatibility updates to allow it to run on modern systems, and it’s available now as a free add-on for everyone who purchases the Blizzard classic Diablo. The game is currently 10% off during the Summer Sale Festival until June 17, 10 PM UTC.
Cool, I hope Diablo II and Starcraft can come.
thx Gog and Blizzard

Maxvorstadt: I assume (or is it "presume"?), you`re from Synergistic? THX, I loved the Hellfire expansion back then, and I`m glad that it`s here!!!
Actually, he is one of the creators of DOSBox. :-)

dudalb: True, but at the time Diablo was released it was a one trick pony that was brand new.
yes, it's limited compared to the rogue action RPG we have today, but back in 1996 it was revolutionary.
Definitely, I remember my friends being obsessed with it at that time and when I got my hands on it, I hadn't seen anything quite like it before.

It's a great game, I'm just not sure that it has the repeatability of D2. Although, the addition of the expansion should help that out immensely. Apart from it being a bit lazy on the artwork side, the expansion is pretty good.
What sorcery is this? Totally unexpected, but a wonderful surprise, yes!!

Thank you GOG team and thank you also Blizzard for the "ok". Now give us that beautiful starcraft classic edition with brood war and we will be happy forever together ;)

Edit: oh, ahem, and Diablo II with expansions, ofc... :D yes yes, you made me smile this morning, i will be going to work singing under the sun!!

miledrive: Weren't those classes only available through a hack tool? Unless my memory escapes me...
command.txt in Hellfire dir. you write inside:

multitest;cowquest;theoquest;bardtest;barbariantest;cryptart;nestart;

Baalsauce: Would have been nice if this was optional or gog had some kind of toggle. This "update" screwed over my current playthrough with my current mods.
But there is a checkbox in galaxy to disable autoupdating.
I'm surprised that Blizzard went along with this, considering their history with Hellfire.

paladin181: To be fair, I don't like expansions that make the game worse. So I didn't ask for it. It was forced upon me fore buying Diablo. So now because of this the game is worse than it was before. But it's ok. I'll continue playing Bezelbub or one of the other good mods and enjoy my game just the same.
How is it worse? Hellfire is allegedly completely separate, so you can still play the original without issues. This just satisfies those who demanded it and means absolutely nothing for those who want to only play the original because it was granted for free. I am also not a fan of Hellfire, but I am still glad for this release as for some people, it apparently means a lot.
Diablo 2 + Expansion plz, GOG! My backup from disk got corroded. I want a DRM-Free version where I could simply download from here. :)

The_Anon: This, this is why people like GoG.

People were all "aw wish we could have Hellfire as well" and not only did GoG deliver they also just gave it away to those who bought Diablo rather than treat it as an excuse to fleece customers for more money.
@The_Anon Agreed. Not only did GOG deliver an out of production expansion their customers had been asking them for, but they turned down an obvious opportunity to double-dip from those customers who bought the initial product without said expansion. Not many companies are this upright.
